NS: People need to have labels to they can complain about being labeled and oppressed.

How can you know they're different unless they tell you so? We've got to label everything!

"There's an app for that!!"

+1 You hit it square on the nose, fellow anon.

NS
You don't need to label yourself anything you don't want to. Some people find the labels helpful because they feel less alone and/or feel more like a part of a community, or it helps them to feel less weird when it seems like everybody around them is different because it's common enough to have a name, or sometimes they just want to have a name for what it is that they are. (I'm not aromantic or asexual but I still think about the labels that do fit me because it gives a word and a solid concept to that part of my identity.)
But some people feel labels are too constraining or too divisive, or just don't like them for whatever reason. That's fine. Nobody's trying to police you or force a label on you. But other people are still entitled to seek their own identities and put names on those identities when they want to.

TB2
Yeah, I have fandom to thank for that as well. And one of the things I learned from educating myself about social justice issues is that you can (even should!) appreciate something while also acknowledging its flaws.

NS:

The same reason race and gender are constantly labeled: because we're trained to think that this kind of stuff matters.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well put.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
NS: Most people use labels to organize the world into comprehensible little boxes. Doesn't mean they're always as helpful as people want them to be.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
NS: People just like to have a name for how they feel, I guess. One one hand, it doesn't bother me and I guess it's nice for them to have a way to identify themselves and find people who are like them. On the other hand, it pisses me off when it starts to head into special snowflake territory. For example, as I am right now, I'm not really capable of/interested in having sex with someone who I'm not emotionally involved with. But I would never call myself a "demisexual" because, um, that's not really a thing. How I am is kind of how society at large wants people to be. I'm not exactly an underprivileged minority in this respect, so I think it's silly to act like being a "demisexual" is a big deal.

(i think i mostly just get annoyed by that particular term. i do believe that being aromantic/asexual is a thing. i am prone to rolling my eyes if the discussion turns to "sexual privilege" or whatever, though.)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Demisexual" pisses me off more than any other label combined. It seems like they're calling anybody capable of a one-night stand any number of belittling names that I won't go into here, but we all know what they are.

Asexual? Aromantic? Fine.

"Demisexual" - that's not.

I stalk the comments because they make me laugh.

NF

Be who you want to be. Don't let others label you.

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
NF: You don't have to put a label on yourself and nobody is going to force you to do that. It's entirely up to you what you want to call yourself (or not call yourself in this case). For some people, it's different. Identifying themselves as asexual, gay, etc helps them find others like them for support they might need.

NS - we don't NEED them. Some people like to have a label because knowing there's a name for how they feel makes them feel less alone. Others feel like it restricts or even oppresses them. You don't have to put a label to yourself if you don't want to.

NS

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of people like labels because they like to belong to something greater. A big group of people who all consider themselves the same thing can be comforting.

I'm not a fan of most labels because they tend to be confining and the public makes judgments based on those labels.

Just be who you want to be and don't worry about what it should be called.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
NS: Different reasons for different people really. Some people like having a name for what they feel, others like being able to put stuff into little boxes, however accurate, or inaccurate, they might be. Personally I use them because it just makes it a hell of a lot easier to explain stuff like that to other people when the need comes up.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
NF- Like others said, you don't have to identify by anything if you don't want to, and it's a personal decision so no one can make you. I'm kinda in the same boat in that I pass the qualifiers for being asexual yet I don't identify as one.

NS: Because we're human. I guarantee you that even if you don't label your sexuality, you and your friends label something else, to set you apart from others.

[identity profile] joules-burn.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
NS: I always just look at them as a simple way to have a conversation and discuss the topics without needing four paragraphs to explain the whole thing. The only time I ever even think of what I'd be labeled is in the form of discussion and contrasting experience.

But everyone takes this shit all super seriously and then insults the crap out of one another and now they seem to start gnawing on their screen just for seeing these terms that they somehow automatically take as slut shaming or acting superior or whatever. But that's pretty much anything else in life. A group of people are assholes about something, but then the person hates the topic, not the assholes.
