Yeah, I thought it was disappointing and there was too much pandering too. Not even the train scene, though, I was fine with that- it was the waltzing that made me cringe, because they were supposed to be covert and trying to avoid attention, and nothing is less convert than two men waltzing together on a dance floor in Victorian era Europe. Though my main beef was the sidelining of the female characters- Noomi Rapace's character was barely fucking there, Mary had one active affect on the plot that then basically didn't matter, and

Irene was basically fridged, wtf.

[discussion of aforementioned spoiler]

Yes, although if Irene actually stays dead I will be very surprised. Seriously, it happened so fast and so off-screen that I will bet real money she comes back. Otherwise why even have her in the movie? She wasn't really involved in the plot, just vaguely connected to Moriarty, and you didn't really need a new motivation for Sherlock. And if they just wanted her out of the way, they could have just not included her.

It could be contractual, ie she had a contract saying that she would be in any sequels if they were made, but then the writers decided she didn't fit into the story.

I don't know if this is the case, but it's another thing to think about.

Yeah, my dad was honestly shocked she didn't show up in the third act, seeing as death is really, really cheap in these movies in general. Assuming they make a Sherlock Holmes 3, and considering the money there's good reason to assume they will, the only reason not to bring her back to life would be if the filmmakers were just eager for an excuse to get rid of her character. Then again, maybe that was the entire point of her appearance (although, jeez, they could have just not had her in this one, unless she was contractually obliged to appear).

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT! I had to have a long conversation with my brother explaining the concept of fridging after the movie. I could have accepted it as the whole "kill someone to show how big the threat is" thing (though I hate that too. lazy writing), but all this fuss was made over Noomi Rapace's character and then she couldn't be less important. The whole thing pissed me off so much because it was just unnecessary and stupid. I probably would have preferred no women here.

I know Sherlock Holmes is all bromancey, but after making the effort to have decent female characters in the first one, this is just so much worse. I heard at one point that it was the same husband/wife team that wrote both movies, so what the Hell happened in this one?

Heh, I had to explain fridging to my dad afterwards. I felt like before the movie was cast, maybe they weren't intending to make NR's character a big part of the marketing/movie in general but then they used basically her only major scene in the trailer because SHE IS SO HOT RIGHT NOW, I HEAR, PEOPLE LIKE HER, RIGHT, THAT WILL GET THEM PUMPED never mind that the writing just fell asleep any time she was around. It drove me nuts because it was like quick, get these damn women out of the way, we can't have the slasher squee interrupted. I actually felt like I was watching a poorly thought out fanfic on screen, particularly because wtf with that pathetic excuse for a plot. I mean, to the point where I seriously started to wonder if Guy Ritchie and the writers weren't involved in the fandom, or aware of fandom to some degree.

The sad thing is, after all that, I don't think it was even that bad- I enjoyed one or two scenes, and might have enjoyed more if I hadn't gotten a headache halfway through that was entirely unrelated to the movie- I just felt like my popcorn was spoiled by the crap with Irene and I never fully got onboard after I realized they were flat out fridging. Or at least, I didn't think it was that bad until I started really thinking about the differences between the movies.

You pretty much just explained my experience completely! I feel so vindicated because my brother has been treating me like a wet blanket, because normally I'm all up for defending less than stellar sequels with him.

Until her death was confirmed, I was just distracted thinking, "The writers wouldn't be that carelessly ignorant would they?" until it was revealed in an almost perfect example of the cliche outside throwing the body in the man's face. I liked a couple of humorous scenes and the whole, "Oh! Waterfall! I recognize that!" but otherwise it put a damper on my enjoyment. I figured I'd just need to wait a while to see it again to enjoy it without "Seriously. Did that really happen?" popping into my head every five minutes.

But then the whole "They didn't use the device from the last film" was pointed out to me online and suddenly I thought of all these other flaws became apparent that I didn't see before (like was there even a mystery? In the Sherlock Holmes film?). So when I sat down and thought about it, the whole thing kinda fell apart. I'm sure it'll just get worse when I can sit down and watch the first one too.

So basically, thanks for saying this because I was just going crazy whenever I had to talk about this movie. Because no one I know sees it!
