I agree to some extent, I loved the first movie, didn't like the second one as much, still a good movie, but not great...

But I gotta disagree with you on the pony scene, I loved it, it was just fun!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's what they mean about pandering to the audience...like, who do you think you are, finding something FUN! That is just not right.

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, that pony scene was hilarious and just plain cute.

[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I gotta admit- one of the reasons I want to see the film is because of the Pony scene. xD

Yeah, I thought it was disappointing and there was too much pandering too. Not even the train scene, though, I was fine with that- it was the waltzing that made me cringe, because they were supposed to be covert and trying to avoid attention, and nothing is less convert than two men waltzing together on a dance floor in Victorian era Europe. Though my main beef was the sidelining of the female characters- Noomi Rapace's character was barely fucking there, Mary had one active affect on the plot that then basically didn't matter, and

Irene was basically fridged, wtf.

[discussion of aforementioned spoiler]

Yes, although if Irene actually stays dead I will be very surprised. Seriously, it happened so fast and so off-screen that I will bet real money she comes back. Otherwise why even have her in the movie? She wasn't really involved in the plot, just vaguely connected to Moriarty, and you didn't really need a new motivation for Sherlock. And if they just wanted her out of the way, they could have just not included her.

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT! I had to have a long conversation with my brother explaining the concept of fridging after the movie. I could have accepted it as the whole "kill someone to show how big the threat is" thing (though I hate that too. lazy writing), but all this fuss was made over Noomi Rapace's character and then she couldn't be less important. The whole thing pissed me off so much because it was just unnecessary and stupid. I probably would have preferred no women here.

I know Sherlock Holmes is all bromancey, but after making the effort to have decent female characters in the first one, this is just so much worse. I heard at one point that it was the same husband/wife team that wrote both movies, so what the Hell happened in this one?

Really sad to say, but I pretty much agree with everything you said. I tried really hard to take it in the spirit it was intended (basically ridiculous AU Holmes!fic), but I never quite got there.

I'm a Holmes/Watson shipper, and do you know what I ended up enjoying most in this film? MARY. SHE WAS FLAWLESS AND AMAZING. I WANT A WHOLE FILM OF HER.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah. Mary was completely brilliant, and I want them to give her so much more to do in the next movie.

And I particularly don't want them to kill her off, but given canon, I'm just having to hope on that count...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hope Mary get tired of being left behind in the third and she join Holmes and Watson in their fight again crime, would they like it or not.
Mary is simply clever and perfect, and it would mean we would see more of her and that movie would be full of perfect interactions. Holmes/Watson bromance, Watson not wanting Mary to put herself in danger, Holmes being totally jealous and Mary being badass, yes or yes?

Eh, different strokes for different folks. I personally thought Mycroft was brill. But then again, I use the not-word Brill, so take my opinion for what you will.

... You did like Mary though, right? 'Cause she kinda was awesome in this movie.

[identity profile] trekkiesara.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it. I liked almost every moment of the movie. And I don't feel bad about it, either.

Eh, different strokes.

I personally loved it and enjoyed it better than SH1.

Everyone's different.

[identity profile] devils-pet.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much this. I thought it was great.

[identity profile] oroburos69.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I like being pandered to. I like movies with stupid jokes, historical inaccuracies, big explosions, and super hurt/comfort angsty-wagnsty drama. The second film was like really good parody fanfic, and I loved it for it.

...okay, I wish it had been Hound of the Baskervilles, because, yes, my favorite Sherlock story, but other than that, I quite enjoyed everything about it.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
heee, it was pretty pandering. Though I'm not gonna lie, I don't mind being pandered to. The thing about this movie (other than [SPOILER} KILLING IRENE WTF WTF) that I didn't like was actually kind of hard to pin down, I couldn't figure out what it was until a couple of days afterward - there's no mystery in it. He knew from the very beginning that Moriarty was behind everything, so the whole movie was essentially a chase. A fun chase! But a Sherlock Holmes story with no mystery for him to solve? THAT'S JUST WEIRD. (LOVED Noomi Rapace though. jdrhglkfsnlhdfn I wish she'd had more to do but I was happy just to stare at her)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
You can argue about that the mystery was what Simza's brother in this whole thing with Moriarty and what was Moriarty's endgame. Sure the chess game between Sherlock and Moriarty was the main focus but the mystery was there happening on the sideline and also moving the plot forward.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
This is gonna end up being one of my top 10 guilty pleasure movies. A lot of stuff in it makes me absolutely cringe, mostly what you point out there. But...it was so damn fun. *shrug*

[identity profile] immasammich.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the humor. It made me laugh. It's the only thing I can remember fondly about this film because the rest of the movie was a mess. A few moments here or there, but mostly a mess.

It would have been more okay if the first one hadn't been so fun. The first one just had...pretty amazing writing. It had great rewatch value and an actual mystery that had man details throughout the film. There were no unnecessary bits. Except, the big revelation at the end (that Moriarty wanted that remote) which only becomes pointless when you realize how the sequel didn't utilize it at all! GRAGH!

I enjoyed this film, but it was just such a disappointment after the first one.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I thought I was the only one! I loved the first one, was so looking forward to this one, and I was so disappointed. Like you said, way too much pandering - the chemistry and subtext between Holmes and Watson in the first one felt very natural and lovely, but this one felt, somehow, much more forced, much more like they were all trying too hard to say "SEE?! THEY'RE TOTALLY IN LOVE, LOOK HOW IN LOVE THEY ARE EXCEPT NOT QUITE BECAUSE WATSON IS GETTING MARRIED BUT STILL TOTALLY IN LOVE BUT NOT REALLY". Way too many explosions, shooting, chase scenes, ennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnndless slow-mo and going-inside-the-gun/cannon/whatever scenes, not enough investigating, hunting for clues, figuring out a mystery for my tastes. In all in, a thoroughly disappointing movie.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
In years?! OK, you're not seeing enough movies, then. (Hesher. What happened, Joe?! And A Dangerous Method--I mean, Fassy and Viggo and spanking and I'm bored. That was so sad.) But anyway, I dunno, they were about equal to me. I kinda didn't take them seriously at all and just enjoyed the action and the bromance...I think I would've been more annoyed about that if not for the BBC series. The Irene thing was some bullshit, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I disagree. It was no more pandering on the level than the first one except that one dance. I think you might think that way because the second was more character driven than the first because the setting and characters were already established.

The only thing I did dislike about SH2 was that they killed off Irene. I was pretty butthurt through the movie because they semi-fridged her (I was glad that the movie didn't dwell on Sherlock's feelings on the matter much since he was going after Moriarty pretty doggingly anyway). It DID made sense because it had it gave the audience a familiar tone like things basically picked up from the last movie and setting the tone for the second. But it was pretty woman-unfriendly even though Mary was a total HBIC in some scenes.

Meh, I loved the movie because it wasn't afraid to poke at itself and it's canon and general SH canon tropes as well.

[identity profile] 21lights.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Stephen Fry in it, I thought Rachel McAdams did a horrible job in the first one (getting rid of her was a plus for me), and I thought the pony scene was funny.

The train scene and the slow-mo through the forest were the only ones that really bugged me. I didn't even mind the dancing scene because I actually felt some genuine emotion from them. Unlike the train scene which just seemed to say, "look, he's in a dress and he's rolling around with Watson! LOL!"

Other than that, I really don't see much of a difference between the two movies in terms of quality. They both have strong and weak points and neither one is all that great. They're just fun. YMMV.

[identity profile] sewingrose.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I was astounded by how much I hated that film, I honestly was thinking of leaving the theater. It just felt so stupid in a way no Sherlock Holmes work should be, and I LOVED the first film. I don't know what's going on or why my wires seem to be crossed from everyone else's but I just thought it was god awful.
