I had no problem with the "I scanlate because there's no way to buy them in my country" thing until I realized it's an empty excuse.

I run a shop that sells anime goods and gets a fair amount of interest; I made the mistake of buying a couple volumes of a manga that everybody said "I'd buy if I could find them!" so that people could purchase them to support the series.

Despite the price being the less than it would be to buy a volume regularly, not a single person has been interested. At all. Ever. Despite other books having to do with the same series being some of my best sellers, nobody wants to buy something if they can get it for free, legal or not.

Really? Because, you know, online sales of Monty Python recordings went up something like 800% after the team made massive swathes of it available for free.
