You must have a apoplectic fit when you wander into the Star Trek/Star Wars/World of Warcraft/Warhammer section of things then.

All of that is essentially permissible fanfiction.

If she didn't get permission, it's wrong without a doubt and she probably will be sued, but if it's been allowed by Meyer's team then it's no biggie and really not your business.

It's a Twilight fanfic with the names changed. She's selling to readers that were brought to her by Stephenie Meyer through the Twilight fandom (in other words, the people buying her name-changed book once read it as her fanfic for free. Yeah, they're stupid.)

I don't have an official opinion on the pull-to-publish phenomenon, but it always seems skeevy to me, even if it isn't quite illegal.

A lot of novels are fanfic with the names changed. It's not illegal.

"permissible fanfiction"

big difference there, dumbass.

media tie-ins are contracted, permissions are GIVEN. it's not someone writing fanfiction, deciding to scrub the names off and publish as original.

it may end up 'looking' the same but it's not. I wish people would stop comparing media tie-in novels as fanfiction. regardless of the quality, it's NOT.

Actually, in my fandom some woman DID take her fanfiction and pitch the idea to the publisher and ended up getting a deal that way. So there you go. It was fanfiction given the green light by the publisher.
