Someone actually published fanfiction? And people bought it? And now they're making a movie? WHAT?

More info is needed anon.

I despise Twilight and it's Mormon brainwashing and support of abusive relationships. But you should NOT be able to publish fanfiction. Meyer is rich, what the hell are her lawyers doing?

How about no more Twilight ever again?

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
If this is true it's kind of screwed up. I've seen people get away with that kind of shit by changing the character's names but if you're not even attempting to hide your tracks by doing that, that's pretty sad. Even if the fic is a better version of Twilight it's still wrong.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
now i know why the joker's always laughing.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
lol

i haven't read it but can you explain how it's twilight fanfic?

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Reading the description, and it doesn't sound like Twilight as much as it sounds like a billion other tropes and conventions of romantic/erotic fiction. Which is basically what Twilight is. So yeah, it sounds a lot like Twilight, but it also sounds like a lot of other things, too. Innocent girl finds herself with experienced/dark/handsome man? Not new to Twilight.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Are you sure it isn't like Twilight in that it reads like fanfiction?

...Seriously, if I didn't read Twilight for myself in book format I would have assumed it was a bad Vampire AU fic. It is kinda hard to rip it off, because it is so chock full of cliches of Vampire Romance that it makes my head hurt. Except for the sparkling. The sparkling is at least new, even if it is one of the things that makes it impossible for the Meyer vampires to be actual vampires.

No lie. There are only two universal constants in vampire-dom worldwide, and Twilight is lacking both. Fascinating!

[identity profile] lovegonnadrown.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
lmao i'm pretty sure any judge with half a brain would throw out that lawsuit on the basis that twilight is already a cliche shitty dime store romance novel

it's just the most popular one

So, yes, apparently it did start out as Twilight fanfic. AU, it seems, but Twilight fanfic nevertheless.

Calm down anon, it's not gonna be a movie. From what I can tell the author is a TV exec and she just pulled some strings to have an article published implying that someone would make a movie to stir up publicity. No one is gonna make a movie out of a book with that much explicit sexual content. It wouldn't be cost-effective.

Also, MoTU was a horseshit fic even when completely divorced from Twilight. Sure it was addictive, but it was horribly written (how many times does Bella/Anna? say "oh my" in a chapter? 30? 40?), the ending was OOC and rushed as fuck because the author was going to pull to publish, and HOLY SHIT the complete inability of the author to write about Americans. She thinks she's covering her ass by inserting a few slangy American interjections, but the voice is completely British she has the characters drinking with every meal including when they're going to drive immediately. (Sorry, I feel like with all the ranting about the story, no one ever mentions that. So I'm gonna.)

[identity profile] nyteowl112.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
You must have a apoplectic fit when you wander into the Star Trek/Star Wars/World of Warcraft/Warhammer section of things then.

All of that is essentially permissible fanfiction.

If she didn't get permission, it's wrong without a doubt and she probably will be sued, but if it's been allowed by Meyer's team then it's no biggie and really not your business.

Have you ever read "City of Bones" or any of the other novels in the series? They started out as Harry/Draco fanfic, and now they're incredibly popular among tons of readers (including former fans of the author's fic) and they're being made into a movie.

I don't get your issue: the writer is changing the names, but if the story really IS similar enough, Meyer will be able to sue and justice will be served. If not, then maybe you ought to consider that the writer JUST MIGHT have created something a little more original than the average fic author. Fanfic, especially AU fanfic, can be awesome and almost as original as so-called "original work". One of my favorite fic authors published an erotic novel that started off as fic, but you'd never know that unless you'd READ her stuff.

I read the Kindle preview out of morbid curiosity and I don't see what the problem is. Yes, it started as a Twilight fanfic, but from the look of what I read it was an AU where Edward was a high-powered executive with a BDSM fetish instead of a vampire. The connections to the work it was allegedly fanfic of were so tenuous that changing the names frankly made more SENSE.

It got a DNF on Smart Bitches Trashy Books, which may tell you something right there. (It's where I found out about it in the first place, thus the morbid curiosity.)

This trend of reeling people in with fanworks and then magically changing the names to make it original work with a pre-installed fanbase is kind of irksome.

I can't believe someone made a movie out of Twilight, so there you go.

[identity profile] octoberland.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
The "publishing company" that published it is actually a group of people that run a fan fiction website. It started out as a Twilight fan fiction site, then they branched out to other fandoms, then to original fiction. But back when it was just Twilight was when they opened their publishing branch and started approaching "authors" for publication. They basically encouraged popular Twilight fic authors to change the names of their characters so they could get published and TWCS could make money off them. They aren't the first to do this though. A site called Twilighted was doing it before them.

I heard that the article in Publisher's Weekly (which is where the movie deal was announced) was actually just written by a PR person from TWCS so I'm really hoping it's just hyped bullshit because this whole pull to publish thing pisses me off. And yes, that includes Cassie Clare.

[identity profile] immasammich.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Is this one of those AU fics with the names changed? Because yeah, that shit pisses me off.

Either you're stealing the characterizations of another series entirely or you made a really crappy fanfic because the characterizations aren't remotely similar. Either way, it's terrible writing. I'm not sure what would be illegal, but it is just morally wrong. Creative plagiarism and stuff like that. Or creative fraud when people knowingly write original fiction, but use fanfic as a way to build up a readership.

But there's a gray area that makes it really hard to pursue legally, and makes me hesitant to want it pursued legally. The whole, one step down a slippery slope could become a pretty reasonable fear for fanfic.

I agree with you on the "no one should publish fanfiction." But if someone discovers another recipe for poo, and makes some more poo, and sells it for cash it won't ruffle my feathers. After all, it's just a pile of poo added to another pile of poo.
