As a fan of both, I'd have to say one's no worse than the other. It's all about the balance. Also so of my best times were drinking and partying in cosplay ;p

It is straight up idiotic that our society condemns one as childish and considers the other a rite of adulthood, however.

(Also lol what the hell is with my fellow drinker/partiers getting so kneejerk defensive over social commentary? One is broadly considered more acceptable than the other, that's just a fact. And that is stupid. If you literally need drugs and alcohol to have a good time and can't have one without it, you may not be immature as OP suggests, but rather desperately in need of an intervention.)

Yeah, I know that one is more socially accepted than the other, but honestly? There's a reason why most adults call students 'those annoying college kids', and it's generally because of the excessive drinking. It's not like they're held up as a paragon of maturity or anything.

And I think the kneejerk reaction is because the secret basically says "don't judge my fun, I'll judge yours instead", and also, I think, because in fandom at large it feels like there's actually a pretty big bias against partygoers, unlike in society at large.

Except those drinking habits usually still continue on into adulthood. My friends still do that and they are in the late 20s-early 30s (although some are coming around that getting shitfaced at 27 isn't exactly cute). Hell my mom and her friends will rip it up at late 40s-mid 50s if they found a casual enough party for it. It is socially accepotable in a lot of countries to get shit-faced on major holidays and celebrations if you're drinking age.

But with cosplay, you're labeled as immature by the general popluace by 18 because you don't have the high school excuse by then.
