I agree. I mean, nothing against drinking in moderation. But right now I'm studying abroad in London. I'm LOVING my time here. But half the people on my program really seem to be here to party/drink; most people went out to the pubs straightaway. And nothing against having a good time, but if all you're doing in a city is getting drunk, you're missing out! I'm not abstaining from alcohol or anything (I've been to a pub myself), but if partying is your only goal I kind of feel bad for you. /rant that's been bothering me.

Well some people do both, neither do I really care about because anything in moderation can easily fit into an adult life (and yeah that includes drugs and alcohol, because not everyone is an addict or acts like an ass when under the influence, and this is coming from someone who doesn't partake in drug use.)

But such is society, personally I never have gotten the "obsessing over sports is totes cools but if you obsess over comics/tv/cartoons then you're a nerd" because people who are obsessed with sports often share the same traits that obsessive nerds have with fandom. But whatever, I don't need to be cool.

Well, cosplayers get a bad rap because of a select few who have nasty attitudes and really are immature people! So sadly, the entire hobby gets shit on. Which sucks because cosplaying is fun as hell.

Similarly, a select few people like to party way to hard and make assholes of themselves while they drink/smoke/etc, and really are immature people! So sadly, the entire recreation gets shit on by people who say things like "If you need alcohol or drugs to "have a good time", you need to grow the fuck up." Although if you ask me, people who "need" them to have a good time probably need some sort of help first.

Every group has their fair share of assholes.

However, I always feel sad for those people. I mean, the whole reason (well, most of the reason) they get smashed is so they can act silly without being self-conscious. A lot of us don't need that, because we have learned not to care (as much) about being normal or 'fitting in' according to society's standards. We don't need a excuse to act drunk! :3

I agree the double-standard is bullshit but the thing to do isn't turn right around and say "NO U!"

If you "need" drugs and alcohol to have a good time, then you probably have a serious addiction and I hope you seek help. If you don't need drugs and alcohol to have a good time but occasionally partake, well, it's not a choice I'd make but I'm not gonna act all holier-than-thou just because my hobby gets shit on by the mainstream sometimes.

Or we can just let everyone do the things they enjoy and not criticize them for it? (It's a novel idea, I know--but it just might work!) I write fan fiction and am making my own armor for a costume (and by "making" I mean using a hammer and some metal to smith a breast plate, helmet, and some ginormous wings), but I can also kick the ass of just about everyone that I know at beer pong.

I think it's immature to insult others in order to make yourself feel better or validated.

Some of us just like to get wrecked. I'm in the middle of my exams and as soon as I'm done I am getting polluted. And it's going to be glorious. I mean, I don't need to, to enjoy myself, I've been having fun studying even, having the laugh with my friends, but I'm looking forward to it.

I know it's probably completely irrational, but I do get irritated by this opinion I run across predominately in fandom where it's okay to drink in moderation, but you're suddenly chopped liver if you actually get drunk. I'm not saying it's something you should do on a regular basis, but sometimes just getting twisted is awesome.

As a fan of both, I'd have to say one's no worse than the other. It's all about the balance. Also so of my best times were drinking and partying in cosplay ;p

It is straight up idiotic that our society condemns one as childish and considers the other a rite of adulthood, however.

(Also lol what the hell is with my fellow drinker/partiers getting so kneejerk defensive over social commentary? One is broadly considered more acceptable than the other, that's just a fact. And that is stupid. If you literally need drugs and alcohol to have a good time and can't have one without it, you may not be immature as OP suggests, but rather desperately in need of an intervention.)
