I'm sorry if it came across as rude as that wasn't my intention. My post wasn't directed at people who ship Sherlock/John or friendships in general. I completely understand why people enjoy these ships and respect their opinions.

My only issue is with people who perceive my opinion and the opinion of the writers as being wrong and somehow homophobic because we believe it's better left as something to interpret rather than made canon. I really hope I'm making sense here. =/

I think the problem here is that a lot of friendship shippers (esp. slash shippers) have been told they're doing it wrong for exactly the reason you stated in your original post, so there was a lot of baggage brought to the responses on both sides :/

Yeah... how often does that happen with straight couples, though? Especially ones that are teased and joked about being a couple as much as John and Sherlock are?

I agree it doesn't happen as often, but it's happened several times with characters I've shipped, including the teasing.

Hoggle made a point below about how there aren't actually that many honest-to-god deep platonic relationships on television. That's what I was trying to get at with the "romance would take away what Sherlock/John have" thing, but I obviously fucked that up. lol

Seriously, I don't know whee the hell this, "There are no male friends that aren't also a couple" thing is coming from.

It's not just a matter of 'male friends' though. Abed and Troy, for instance, aren't on the same level as Sherlock and John. And House/Wilson is based off SH, so I don't think it really counts. Not sure who you're referring to with the Avatar mention, and I haven't seen Boston Legal. Star Trek I agree with.

House and Cameron
Harry and Hermione
Phoebe and Joey on Friends
The Doctor and Amy Pond, maybe?

Not saying I ship all of these, but they could certainly be interpreted that way.
