[The Muppets 2011]

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the point of Gary was to be the fans of the Muppets. I mean, if I could go and meet them, I would! He's supposed to be all of the fans who love and miss the Muppets and want them to come back. He's not a Gary Stue (I don't think), he's just another character. And, yeah, it's his hearing of the Evil Plot that leads him to Kermit, but do you really think that Kermit would have run off to find everyone if he didn't really want to? Honestly, I think Kermit needed someone from outside the Muppet show to show him that people really do care. If it had been someone we knew about, I feel like Kermit would have felt like he was being patronized, you know?

My thoughts exactly. It played out well and I found him very endearing.

Yay! I was starting to feel very odd, as I actually like Gary... |D

I can see your point but I didn't find him bothersome so I'm imagining he must not be *that* badly written.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Spoilers (obviously)

I felt the exact same way. I couldn't stand him. It felt like he was a bad Mary Sue with him stepping in and saving the show. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

[identity profile] glamourcorpse.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that's worse than that is that he wasn't needed. They didn't need a "we still remember you, come out of retirement film" because people saw the movie to SEE the Muppets and we already new we loved them. There wasn't half enough typical Muppet madness in the movie because it spent it's time telling us what we knew. I liked the humans a whole lot, and their songs, but until the Muppets finally came together...meh. They split up in MTM and had to be brought back together so that wasn't exactly original at all either.)

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
They didn't need a "we still remember you, come out of retirement film" because people saw the movie to SEE the Muppets and we already new we loved them.

That's what bugged me about the plot, too. If a Muppet product is good, people will go and see it. People never actually forgot them.

But it was worth it for Jim Parsons' cameo in "Man or Muppet?".

[identity profile] ianthine9.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly?

My 9 year old nephew had only the vaguest idea of who the muppets are before the new movie. The last Muppet movie in theaters came out before he was born. The only way he knew anything about them was when they'd cameo on Sesame Street.

Most of the target audience has not grown up with muppets. The plot was incredibly well done IMO because kids don't know who the muppets are. The only people who knew who they were are 20+ year olds who remember when Muppet Treasure Island came out in 96. My nephew was actively against seeing the movie because to him muppets were "old" and not "cool". His opinion did a complete 180 after seeing the movie, but to the target audience? Yeah, the plot is incredibly relevant.

IDK I liked the plot of the film. I do agree that some parts dragged on a bit (and I didn't give two shits about Gary and Mary's stupid love plot), but the final scene where the Muppets lose the studio and think that nobody remembers them, only to have THOUSANDS of people waiting for them at the doors really emphasized the fact that they haven't been forgotten by their fans.

Though it seriously pissed me off that Walter took the spotlight at the end.
Kermit: "Hey? Where's Walter?"
Walter: "See? Your fans! They love you guys!"
Kermit: "Well? Aren't you going to join us?"

Oh go away, Walter! You're not a muppet and you should not be sharing their limelight!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! This!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I also hated him. At the beginning of the movie I thought he was a disturbing metaphor for physical disability. Some kid looks different so he imagines he's a Muppet and no one tells him he's delusional. It's either that or his mom fucked Big Bird.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Good god you freak, Big Bird's only six.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I kind of thought the same thing. Minus that last bit. But the beginning had that whole whole "protective older brother who puts his adult life on hold to take care of his developmentally challenged younger brother" vibe.

[identity profile] broadwaybabe11.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
This is something I would see on a Wild Mass Guessing page on tvtropes.. *sigh* I spend too much time on there..

Different strokes, I guess.

I liked him quite a lot. His whistling act was adorable, IMO.

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
His whistling was very cute, but we already went through the whole "finding your true self" thing with Kermit in The Muppet Movie and Muppets Take Manhattan.

When he first started doing his whistling bit on stage I was like, "this is kind of stupid." But then I actually took a moment to think about the actual acts from the original Muppet Show. And then I was like, "this is VERY stupid. AND THAT'S WHY IT'S SO PERFECT."

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
YES. THANK YOU. That's exactly what I thought! In fact, as much as I love the Muppets in general, the whole film felt like Jason Segel's Muppet Fan Fiction.

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I felt that he was a self-insert-y Gary Stu. And I really didn't much care for his character. But while I don't think he added much to the movie, I also don't think he was by any means a detriment. I just kinda smiled and nodded for his parts of the plot and enjoyed a couple of his musical numbers while actively engaging in and absolutely loving the rest of the muppets' parts. :U

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Spoilers: I didn't mind him up until the end scene. The scene where the muppets open the doors to thousands of screaming fans who really haven't forgotten about them....then all of a sudden it becomes all about Walter. And they all lift him up, while the crowd cheers. And the movie ends with Walter's damn whistling. WTF. Go away, Walter.

Oh, and I'd rather have watched a final song and dance between Kermit and Piggy than Jason Segal and Amy Adams.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
He's definitely a self-insert Mary Sue, but I don't think that makes him a bad character. I thought he was really cute and funny (that scene where he continuously screams left me in stitches). I can see how you could find him annoying, though. I hope that it didn't ruin the movie for you.
Edited 2012-01-21 08:29 (UTC)

[identity profile] gertie-flirty.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
But Jason Segal inserted himself into the movie as himself, though.

[identity profile] broadwaybabe11.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't dislike him, but I actually did compare him to a self-insert while watching the movie.

[identity profile] anelectricsnail.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this.

In a way, I almost thought it was kind of intentional. Maybe.
