Sorry, but I can just never quite understand the need to prop one thing up by knocking something else down. It doesn't surprise me to see it since if you've been in any fandom for more than a week you'll run across some form of this. Is it insecurity about the thing you like? That it can never be liked on its own merit, but rather it must be better than something else? Is that the only way it can have worth? Actually whenever I see these kind of these "X > Y" statements tacked on to why someone likes something, it makes me feel like X is fairly weaksauce if that's a highlighted reason of greatness.

Please. Plenty of people like X, Y or epsilon on its own merit; you could try not to be so influenced by one person's opinion.

Are you completely unfamiliar with the concept of having favorites? By definition, having a favorite something means you like it more than something else. And considering a fairly large portion of the BBC!Sherlock fandom touts Benedict as the One True Sherlock Holmes, then it's no wonder there are fans of the other Holmes interpretations going "hang on a minute..."

Yes, I'm completely unfamiliar with the concept of having favorites. *rolls eyes* I actually couldn't care less what petty battles are going on in this fandom. If people are saying Benedict > Brett, that's weaksauce as well.

How is liking one adaptation more than another "knocking something else down"? Holy crap, am I knocking down peanut M&Ms because I like the plain ones more? I can't believe I've let my candy-coated insecurities get the better of me like this...

So yeah, it's called having preferences, and it's not weird that people do this. I'm surprised it's not a concept you've encountered before, but if not... there you are. It's perfectly normal.
