Sure it did. He married a woman, didn't he?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
da

Really?

So if I marry someone of the opposite sex and have a child, it instantly makes me straight?
K, nice to know. Maybe my parents will love me again...
Oh wait, you mean that when a gay person marries someone of the opposite sex, heterosexuality wins a round? Cuz that gay person is on the winning side now? But, uh, wouldn't that imply that that person has turned into someone who's 100% straight and lost all his gayness? Cuz that didn't happen.

I know you're trolling and all but excuse me while I puke

Absolutely. Of course it does - what's your problem with logic?

The point, you missed it;
"heterosexuality wins a round" implies that the gay person turns straight and the audience doesn't know to think otherwise. But you can't turn straight/bi/gay just because you want to, ergo, "heterosexuality wins" is false. Sure, you can live on the down low or be bisexual or whatever, but that hardly makes one straight.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
The heterosexual social schema is what's on display - it doesn't matter about down low when the face presented to the world is just another heterosexual couple.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Heterosexuality may not have won, but an argument that *heteronormality* won can most certainly be made.

Marrying someone of the opposite sex will not turn a homosexual person straight, but the idea of a homosexual person giving up the opportunity to be in a domestic partnership with someone they are sexually attracted to can be seen as a little sad. It can also be seen as giving into the pressure to "act straight" like their sexuality is something to be covered up and lied about.

Of course, Doumeki couple be bisexual. I don't recall anything that precluded that orientation.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
To continue, the heterosexual paradigm comes out on top again. It has successfully oppressed the alternative.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
It has successfully oppressed the alternative.

Except the point in the manga was never homosexuality vs heterosexuality.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
well then why all the whining then? You mean it wasn't a story about two men that ended up between a man and a woman?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
DA, but the story didn't end up about a man and a woman (although you can argue that it was: between Watanuki and Yuuko but it wasn't romantic really). Doumeki isn't the main character. The one who made Doumeki and Watanuki's relationship impossible was Watanuki himself for becoming semi-immortal and unable to leave the shop. Not Kohane.

Doumeki and Kohane remind me a lot of Saya from X/1999 devoting their life and family to the one they love. It's obvious that their marriage is mostly likely a marriage of convenience and companionship rather than a marriage of geninue love especially they can't be with the one they love.

+1

Also: Kohane and Doumeki never stopped loving Watanuki.

There is absolutely no reason that Kohane and Doumeki can't be in genuine love with each other. It's just that they probably love Watanuki more. That doesn't automatically make their relationship merely one of convenience and companionship.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, how should I explain this...
No. No it wasn't. The story, somehow, never ended. You need to look deeper.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Just because it wasn't deliberately set up to be homosexuality vs. heterosexuality doesn't mean that there cannot be unfortunate implications in a work.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
sa

I never said there can't be unfortunate implications at work.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
You sounded pretty damn dismissive.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
da

Certainly, some works have unfortunate implications like the ones you mention but in this case...well, it's CLAMP for God's sake. This is just how they roll and you have to like or lump it. Whether you're rooting for a het or a yaoi couple, you're probably going to get fucked over one way or another by them.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think we're overreaching here. For a UI to occur, there has to be choices. If Watanuki was mortal and wasn't constrained at the shop, then it would be an UI or if he chose either Hiwamari or Kohane.

People are also forgetting that Kohane and Hiwamari also lost too. No one got to be with Watanuki because they CAN'T.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
This

Everyone got the short end of that stick

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Your looking at the situation as a Watsonist. There are no choices because Watanuki is immortal. I'm looking at it as a Doylist. CLAMP made choices, CLAMP decided to have Watanuki become immortal and that his immortality would preclude a romantic attachment (I've read some very romantic, but tragic, stories with an immortal and a mortal falling in love and staying together as long as possible).

To be perfectly frank, the way I read the ending was as follows:the great tragedy was that Watanuki's love for Doumeki was purely emotional and not sexual, while Doumeki's love for Watanuki was more emotional than sexual, there was a sexual element. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, Watanuki chose Yuko over Doumeki (there were a lot of mitigating circumstances, but in the end that's what happened - note: I always felt that Yuko was a mother figure not a potential sexual partner, so this isn't a case of choosing a heterosexual relationship over a homosexual one, but choosing a parental one over a sexual/close friendship).

I do believe that Doumeki's marriage to Kohane is them making "the best" of the situation and as someone above said, dedicating their lives and future family to taking care of Watanuki - and that this is melancholic because it's not hugely healthy. I don't think that they were necessarily *unhappy*, I like to believe that they were content. I just would have like this to be a bit more explicit in the manga because as it stands, any positive outlook on the ending requires a rather extensive headcanon. There's leaving loose ends for the reader to think about, which is good, and there's cutting things off before the emotional payoff. In this case I think CLAMP came way closer to the second.

I also wanted to mention that Doumeki struck me as demisexual, I just couldn't figure out where to mention this earlier.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
have you read the manga?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-21 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I have. Additionally, my statement was intended to be a general statement not just about this particular manga. I've found that people often make the argument that something *can't* be offensive and/or have unfortunate implications simply because the creator didn't intentionally address the issue.
