Really, pre 20th century hygiene wasn't as ghastly as people think.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)Also, people have brushed their teeth for thousands of years. It wasn't actually brushing, but they'd chew on sticks so maybe Tarzan was off munching on a branch. Toothbrushes came in around 800 or so years ago using animal hair for bristles.
...I might be a bit of a history nerd.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-23 03:18 am (UTC)(link)I always assumed that if one never brushed one's teeth, they'd be perfectly fine and the bacteria would be perfectly balanced. I feel like the body should have some natural mechanism to keep the mouth clean... and this is a very weird comparison, but it's sort of like the vagina. You're not supposed to use douches because it's self-cleaning. I sort of assumed the mouth was the same, and that by brushing our teeth we've disturbed the natural balance and so we have to keep doing it... I dunno, maybe that's a load of bollocks, but I don't think nature would leave us to have shitty breath to repel possible mates!

Tooth rot may have been lower in hunter-gatherer societies, however, since they ate less sugar.
That said, many animals' lifespans are limited by tooth decay in old age, though humans last longer due to cooking and grinding their food (making it softer for those with rotten teeth).
/is not an expert in dental hygiene, but there you go.
