So, I loved Yuna. That kind of personality isn't for everyone, but it's for me. Sweet, naive, gentle Yuna. Everything about her was very precious, and beautiful and brave. And then X-2 made her into a hot-pants strutting pop star, and I am ALL for character development, but it's ridiculous that they expected us to buy into such a 180 personality shift. That's not embracing her culture, that's not freedom from her pilgrimage. I can't believe that a world-saving quest and tradition was all that was holding her back from swimsuit sized attire and gun-slinging. Confidence =/= tiny clothing.

same anon

Seriously. When I saw the first promo image of X-2 Yuna, my jaw dropped to my feet. I know some folks PREFER X-2 Yuna to her original incarnation, but that's further evidence that she's practically a different character all together.

I felt that Yuna's original personality came out more towards the end of the game. Also, I think it's disingenuous to refer to her as suddenly becoming a slut (she may dress more provocatively, but I don't think dress conveys either sexual willingness or personality fault). She obviously isn't even over Tidus. I interpret much of her X-2 characterization as a reaction against the emotional repression she put herself through in X, and I feel like a lot of the over-the-top cheeriness is something of a fake front, like she feels like she ought to be happier and FORCES herself to be so.

Not saying X-2 isn't a fanservicey lesser sequel, but I think Yuna's characterization did have depth that many people don't give it credit for. Rikku's, on the other hand...

This, thank you! I thought Yuna was clearly trying to be happier and was failing miserably with coping.

I don't believe I used the word slut. I don't share that opinion, even if I dislike the hot pants etc. And you know, I agree that everything she's become in X-2 could be assumed to be some major coping mechanisms in the flesh. But I don't know that's what they were going for, so I'm loathe to SEARCH for depth, ya dig? As you said, it's a fanservicey lesser sequel, and I don't think Yuna's changes were anything more than fan-pandering.

MIND YOU: I've played roughly half of X-2. I truly did not enjoy it, and it got sold right on back to the store. But if her original personality shines through towards the end of the game, I'm willing to stomach the 'putting on a front' explanation for her actions and mannerisms.

Sorry, I didn't mean to put words in your mouth. I was feeling vaguely defensive based on comments I'd heard in the past about X-2 that included slut-shaming.

I totally understand not being willing to put up with the game given the obnoxious amounts of pandering. I don't think I'd have been able to do it myself if I wasn't in love with job-based combat systems.

I feel like a lot of the over-the-top cheeriness is something of a fake front, like she feels like she ought to be happier and FORCES herself to be so.\

Couldn't have said it better myself. I felt like she was desperate to change, which is why she wanted to be more like Rikku.

And yes, she did want to be more like her cousin. It even says so in Shinra's dossiers.

Good storytelling is not found in footnotes that say "Oh, BTW this is why." Showing, not telling.

No one said it was good storytelling
