DAT ASS.

Sorry, had to say it. XD Seriously though, I agreee with you. The jump in personalities from serious, naive Yuna to a hotpants clad "Oh poopie!" Yuna was just surreal. O_O I know people say 'well it's just Yuna showing her true personality blah blah blah', but for me, it just seemed an excuse to make her into a scantily clad airhead. -_-

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I thought that scene was a way to point out how she didn't have her own personality and was sort of absorbing it off of those around her. It made perfect sense to me, as she was pretty much raised to be a sacrifice...and then that part didn't happen so now she's left to figure out what to do with herself.

Not sure, may be worth another playthrough...

What did they do? Did they make Yuna into a huge slut? All I'm seeing is ass right now,

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, the secret maker cropped out the 10 guys she was simultaneously fucking in that scene

Honestly? X-2 actually made me like Yuna.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I loved Yuna. That kind of personality isn't for everyone, but it's for me. Sweet, naive, gentle Yuna. Everything about her was very precious, and beautiful and brave. And then X-2 made her into a hot-pants strutting pop star, and I am ALL for character development, but it's ridiculous that they expected us to buy into such a 180 personality shift. That's not embracing her culture, that's not freedom from her pilgrimage. I can't believe that a world-saving quest and tradition was all that was holding her back from swimsuit sized attire and gun-slinging. Confidence =/= tiny clothing.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
same anon

Seriously. When I saw the first promo image of X-2 Yuna, my jaw dropped to my feet. I know some folks PREFER X-2 Yuna to her original incarnation, but that's further evidence that she's practically a different character all together.

[identity profile] meilibi.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt that Yuna's original personality came out more towards the end of the game. Also, I think it's disingenuous to refer to her as suddenly becoming a slut (she may dress more provocatively, but I don't think dress conveys either sexual willingness or personality fault). She obviously isn't even over Tidus. I interpret much of her X-2 characterization as a reaction against the emotional repression she put herself through in X, and I feel like a lot of the over-the-top cheeriness is something of a fake front, like she feels like she ought to be happier and FORCES herself to be so.

Not saying X-2 isn't a fanservicey lesser sequel, but I think Yuna's characterization did have depth that many people don't give it credit for. Rikku's, on the other hand...

Ha, the thing I loved about FFX-2 was how all the summoners went kinda crazy with freedom now that there was no chance they'd have to sacrifice themselves to save the world. It actually made sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, it always made sense to me, even if it wasn't done particularly well. It's not like she didn't have a playful side in FF (the race in the Island you get Ifrit, for example?), she just finally had a chance to have let loose, be unburdened. A more visible transition would've been nice, but I don't think it's the 180 people make it out to be.

Also, first person to say "omg it just turned her into a huge slut", I hope your nose falls off, seriously.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll never argue that she wasn't playful in X, or that she wasn't burdened by the sacrifice she had to make, and all of those world-saving expectations. I'm all for Yuna letting loose, growing up, character development, etc: but it didn't have to mean short shorts, guns and idiotic writing. Whether or not it was a natural transition, or what-have-you, is a moot point. She did change, but I don't think it was for the better. Remember, this isn't a real person who 'turned out' a certain way. Square-Enix decided this for her, wrote it, and didn't justify it very well. We shouldn't, as the players, have to surmise hidden depths and reasons.

And you know, X and its incarnations, has a Rikku. We didn't need a second one, no matter how very related they are. X-2 is like... the story of two teeny-boppers and their bad-ass biker friend. Fighting crime. Whut.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Your waifu?

Sweet, virginal, pure waifu.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I was playing FFX-2 a few weeks ago (I pretend it's a completely unconnected game), and my little sister was watching. In a particular cutscene I pointed to Yuna and said: "See her? In the previous game, she was Jesus." Her face was priceless XD

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I don't care for X-2, never finished it, etc. But, for fuck's sake people, hot pants are not a personality trait. Complain about the objectification, the fact that they felt the need to sex up her character design, whatever. But let's not pretend that wearing something more revealing is some kind of huge personality change, especially when there was nothing to support the idea of her being body shy to start with. Her original outfit was pretty clearly more formal and designed to convey that she was, you know, going to be a savior.

You can side eye the costume choice without slut shaming or pretending that women who wear long skirts one day would never, ever wear short shorts another.

...People change. Between loosening her burden from FFX and losing Tidus, I don't think it was all that unrealistic. The LOOK may be extreme, but it's not like Yuna started nailing everyone in X-2. I thought she was having fun, experimenting with.. whatever side of her personality she never got to be in touch with before. Being a summoner was never going to be the be-all and end-all of her existence.

Fuck FFX-2, man. You know what I would have liked to see in FFX-2? Yuna traveling through Spira, attempting to find her place in a world that no longer needed someone like her. Yuna struggling to cope with no longer having the religion that previously ruled her life. Yuna struggling to deal with the fame of being the one woman who saved the planet. And so on. These things were ever-so-briefly mentioned in FFX-2, but it was all ditched in favor of stupid mini-games and cutesy dialogue.

So yeah, I really hate it when fans say "Oh, it's not unrealistic. She had two years to change" or "She's allowed to be different" because it's blatantly obvious Square didn't change her for character-development reasons. They just wanted to show Yuna in hotpants for 7-or-so hours during cutesy missions and saying things like "Oh poopie!"

Did everyone miss the point that Spira is mostly Island Paradise Land and everyone wears revealing clothing there? All the short skirts, bikini tops, bare chested men, sleeveless and tight shirts, etc. etc. were all over the place. Hell, Yuna's original outfit blatantly showed her bra off. This isn't Yuna suddenly going "IM GOING TO DRESS LIKE A VICTORIA'S SECRET MODEL YEY", its more equivalent to her updating her style to fit in with the rest of the damn planet.

Even if the clothing wasn't the point of this secret, the way its cropped (focused around her ass) implies that it is.

[identity profile] houdini-splicer.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
She seemed so much faker to me in X, I really really didn't like her then. She just seemed to act like a robot or a doll that was doing what she thought she had to do/was told she had to do so she never developed a real personality.

[identity profile] novemberxi.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
I agree -_-

They totally changed her for the sake of fanservice. Her outfit in FFX was beautiful and elegant, it suited her personality. Her outfit in FFX-2 and the fact that she uses guns as her main weapons was something straight out of a bad AU fic.

I didn't mind Rikku's outfit because it seems like something she would wear, but I dunno... it doesn't work with Yuna at all.

Then again I just look at FFX-2 as a bad AU fic that is completely unrelated to FFX. It's easier that way.

[identity profile] sevenatops.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see much of a personality change. Both Yunas are emotional wrecks who try desperately to force themselves into fitting people's expectations of them to gain what they assume is acceptance, failing.

Me too, Anon, me too. I don't mind if people enjoy FFX-2 for whatever reason, but I just can't consider that stranger running around masquerading as the protagonist to be Yuna.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Maaan I've spent so much time defending my love for X-2 and X-2 Yuna and I just... idec anymore. FFX Yuna bored me; FFX bored me, X-2 Yuna is cute and fun and I think I played the game like 5 times (I was young and bored, OK) and I loved the goddamn hotpants and the goddamn dresspheres and stupid massage minigames and the raging lesbian undertones of it all. I prefer Yuna when she's wearing cute outfits and playing with the girls rather than being a srs saviour and mooning over Tidus. I don't even care if it was a realistic development or an excuse for fanservice.

I always thought her outfit in X-2 made sense, because it would be more mobile.
They did throw fanservice into there, because hey, it's SE and it's a JRPG.
But the outfit was appropriate for all the jumping around, shooting, "action girl" type stuff she'd be doing in this game.

I also liked her personality a lot more, simply because she actually had one, in this game.

[identity profile] raevell.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
My biggest issue with FFX-2 will always be the wasted potential. They took all the seriousness out of the series. Sure, it's nice to just have a fun cheerful JRPG occasionally but I was really looking forward to a continuation of one of my favorite Final Fantasy games and this just didn't fit the bill in anyway whatsoever for me.

I remember how excited I was at all the original mystery surrounding the blonde guy who looked like Tidus and everyone on the forums and such wondering if it were really him and then if so what the heck was he doing with this other girl, what was her deal, what's going on, etc. Instead the plot was kind of secondary and then basically became, "Nope, Chuck Testa!" And then Tidus only shows up in the end if you complete a certain percentage of the game. They built this intricate world and had all these developed characters and basically did nothing with them.

Argh, to this day it bums me out when I think of what could have been.
