If your American friends mock you, an non-American, for not knowing about American history, just quiz them on some of your own country's history. If that doesn't shut them up, it's time for new friends!

Anyway, Mel Gibson is super gross. I can't watch Chicken Run anymore, so I feel your pain. :(

1. MTE. It's unfair to expect everybody to be well-versed in American history but not the history of other countries.
Not that it should excuse harmful ignorance and intolerance or anything, but the point is to be sensitive to comparative education levels and not hypocritical in our expectations.

2. Awwww maaaaan not Chicken Run! I don't want that movie ruined!

I wish I could give him up. The Patriot is my "watch this when I'm feeling really horrible so I can feel better" movie. I mostly ignore Mel and watch solely for Jason Issacs, Heath Ledger, and Rene Aberjonis. I really, really wish someone else besides Mel was in that movie.

TBH I don't think I can ever excommunicate Chicken Run from my list of favorite movies, so don't feel too bad. Mel is an ass but he's a good actor and was in a lot of good movies. I guess it's easier to ignore him when the film is animated, though.
