Except MediaFire is a way better site: no waiting to download and you can download multiple files at the same time, so no great loss.

Yeah, but there's a small file size limit.

I use MiPony as a donwload manager, and it easily joins files, you just select the .001 file in your completed download lists, and then hit the HJ Split button, and then hit join. It's beautifully set up. You can also queue everything up, and when you copy links they automatically show up in your MiPony links tab, so you can even queue up 'to download' links, and then start them all at one (which is nice when you're doing your nightly round ups.
