it seriously disturbs me that so many people are this selfish, but it's for a good cause, so whatever. Nothing new about this.

Good on you, champ. At least it got you motivated to do something! yeah.

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no kidding. It's...disturbing how much people are misinformed about SOPA/PIPA (or the DMCA for that matter) and just how insidious this kind of legislation is.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Shutting down Megaupload had absolutely jack to do with SOPA/PIPA. The government can't take action on a bill that hasn't been passed, because it's NOT A LAW YET. Megaupload had been getting investigated by the FBI for over a year for other reasons. It's just that the timing was perfectly synced (and possibly intentional).

But if it helped you join the protests, good for you.

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I'm amazed at how many people think Megaupload is going to somehow magically come back if SOPA/PIPA/ACTA and all other variations of these internet censorship bills are shut down.

[identity profile] gabrielsoboe.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Shutting down Megaupload had absolutely jack to do with SOPA/PIPA."

THIS. Seriously, I explained that to someone and they keep repeating that it was SOPA's fault when the damned bill hasn't even been voted on.

[identity profile] orijinaru.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The way I understand it the timing of this was intentional. It's probably another reason why Anonymous is going on their current rampage, like how they brought down CBS.com earlier.

This. For one thing, people were using it to share child pornography

This is pretty much MTE and it's making me facepalm every time it's brought up in SOPA/PIPA discussions. What really gets me is that it's proof that we can already fucking prosecute sites guilty of copyright infringement and piracy. SOPA and PIPA are just ways to yank things off the internet based on hearsay because it's haaaaard to actually investigate and prosecute people through due process. That's pretty much the problem with all these new bills that try to 'enhance efficiency' by lazily doing away with the need to go through currently existing legal routes to prosecution.

THIS. Good fucking god.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
it's really fucking sad you didn't care about sopa/pipa before this.

jsyk.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-24 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
People out there still don't know about this. And word is still spreading. Is it really all that sad that somebody realized it's actually a real threat and changed their opinion on it?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, this is how most of the country works. People aren't proactive enough to see the future consequences of decisions/legislation being made now. It isn't until something happens that directly affects their own lives that they realize something should've been done to prevent it in the first place.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I was so sad when I found out Megaupload got seized. Good night, sweet prince. ;_;

But yeah. If you're American, contact your congressperson about the issue. Politicians care about votes, so your input DOES matter. If you're not American, just do your part to raise awareness.

[identity profile] ecoerrante.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually there is [was?] a petition people from outside the US can sign to send to the state department. I don't have the link personally, but I think most of the main sites protesting have a link for 'If you're not from the US'

At least they didn't have to come for the trade unionists and Jews before you decided to pay attention.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
That is what I was thinking.

[identity profile] malik-chan.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Except MediaFire is a way better site: no waiting to download and you can download multiple files at the same time, so no great loss.

[identity profile] alice-alaizabel.livejournal.com 2012-01-22 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but there's a small file size limit.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder what happened to the content we had uploaded in MU?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-22 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
...You know. This secret just reminds me how many people don't realize exactly what SOPA/PIPA will mean if it's passed, and that just...makes me sad. : /

That said, as someone up thread already said - Megaupload was taken down for reasons not related to the bills.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-23 02:00 am (UTC)(link)

The Megaupload creators weren't very good people fyi. They deserved it.

LOL forever @ "flying Mjolnir."

(Anonymous) 2012-01-23 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's really sad. I'm kinda disgusted how oblivious people are or how little they care as long as it does not effect them.

I facepalmed so hard when people on twitter were freaking out over wikipedia being gone for A DAY and they did not know why. They were too damn dumb to even read the blackout page in front of their eyes.

Then all the misinformed people thinking Megaupload was because of SOPA/PIPA yet not giving a damn before. Too much effort for my lazy generation I guess.

The reason the U.S government is as bad as it is is because:
1. Greed and corruption
2. Citizens don't pay attention to anything outside their little bubble enough to call them out on their shit

For the love of god, I'm begging you, stop waiting until you start suffering to care about things. Otherwise we won't have anything left at all.

[identity profile] greeneyed.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I hated MegaUpload but loved MegaVideo because of the video quality. Now, dear internet, think about people needing readable subtitles - that is my mum. English is my native language but not for her and lovely Polish TV series website admins had been uploading their vids there. Yup, there are different sites, but the quality is bad. I can buy DVDs ... but they don't have subtitles. For example only the last season of "Sex in the City" has Polish text.
