I didn't like the movie because of John Smith. The second one was amazing and don't give a fuck what other people say. John Rolfe was great. And at least they built their relationship and allowed her to choose her own way, even if that path didn't involve him.

Oh, and yay, hate for Mel Gibson. Sorry. I can't stand him.

Can you believe people still like him? They're mostly the rather ignorant Christians who say since he made the Passion he's exempt from all accusations. The fuck.

IAWTC. I actually loved the second movie. I loved that it showed the culture shock (albeit in an extremely sanitised-for-kids way) and even got across that the Europeans thought she was, variously, a savage, a curiosity, and a slut. It showed the way she was whitewashed, too. And I also loved that, almost uniquely in kids' movies, it was presented as absolutely okay that she was in love with two men and didn't end up with her original love interest. And John Rolfe was great, and the rivalry between the two Johns was also fantastic. Sure, it wasn't historically accurate (YEAH SURE SHE WAS AN AMBASSADOR AND AT THE END THEY SAILED OFF INTO THE SUNSET THAT'S TOTALLY WHAT HAPPENED) but it felt, oddly, more respectful for the fact that it kind of showed how she was being made "other".

It's the only Disney sequel I think is superior to its parent film (...well, maybe Cinderella 3), and honestly, for all the hate it gets, it's one of the only Disney sequels I'll watch for any other reason than trainwreck syndrome.
