First off, you left off an "in my opinion" there, OP. I've never had a problem understanding layouts in American comics, but manga doesn't flow for me at all. It's a difference in style and taste of the reader. That's it. So, you don't like it? Don't read it.

That being said, if you have an interest in the characters, most mainstream superheroes have enough exposure through other mediums (cartoons, movies, even novels) that you don't ABSOLUTELY HAVE to read the comics. Why not give those a shot if the characters appeal to you?
