I think saying that American comic characters look like soulless puppets and manga ones don't is a sweeping, fallacious generalization. Many manga have entire casts who not only look virtually identical (you mentioned Ranma 1/2 and Rumiko Takahashi is enormously guilty of this, and I haven't read Dragonball but Akira Toriyama's work seems to suffer enormously from it as well) both face- and body-wise, but show expression with wacky pasted-on emoticons and faces that are almost entirely static. They need to look angry? No problem! Tilt the eyebrows and mouth and leave everything else unchanged. We need a character with their mouth wide open? WE GOT YOU COVERED! Fill what would be the chin of a neutral face with mouth. Happy character? Vacant, unfocused smile. Oh fuck people won't be able to tell these dudes apart, welp let's just give one of them wacky hair.

There are a lot of manga artists who do not do this, but what you have posted are not sterling examples of it so I'm going to venture a guess that you haven't looked at Western comics very extensively either.

yessss, counter sweeping, fallacious generalization with more sweeping, fallacious generalizations

I specifically stated that this applied to the manga the OP was talking about and did not apply to every manga ever made, but nice try.
