Woah, as a Brit I always assumed that robin looked crappy and fake because it was, well, crappy and fake. I never realised that's what American robins look like! (It's also really weird to me that Americans think of robins as Spring birds, when over here they're all about Christmas!)

Same! As a kid, I just assumed they'd run out of money and painted the front of a blackbird...

I wondered why there are always robins in the Christmas books I had as a kid... Now I know!

And to be fair, American Robins can be a lot cuter (and sometimes a lot more buff, depending on the region) than that picture. For example-

Wow, that robin is one ripped bird o_0

'Course, it doesn't hurt that it's not an Old World robin at all, it's a bleedin' thrush!!!

...Actually, I don't have anything against American robins. They've got their charms, too. I especially like how they get pissed on fermented berries and stagger about when they migrate through my neighbourhood each year.

But the English robin? Essence of adorable! ♥ ♥ ♥

Heh, that isn't even a ripped one. I remember in Alabama we had robins that looked like they were bodybuilders. Seriously, they were BIG.

We also had unusually large squirrels, so it might have been something in the water.

Oh, and the OP's picture is a thrush? Huh... *googles English Robins* Oh wow, they ARE adorable. I like how tough and bold looking the American Robin is, but MAN is the English Robin freakin' cute.

I didn't know robins were Christmas birds in the UK. (...Though, that might come up in The Secret Garden or something? I remember my book having an illustration of a fat little British robin.) We have the cardinal for that. I was tickled when I moved somewhere they actually live, so there were real live cardinals at Christmas.
