I think if his various horrific character hairstyles prove anything, it's probably that he's the world's most secure man.

But, at the risk of sounding totally shallow, he did kind of waste his peak beautiful years trying not to be beautiful. (And where the hell was he between Young Ones and Filthy, Rich and Catflap?) The New Statesman isn't even much of a consolation considering the writers didn't always seem get that that the way the story is set up, you're on B'Stard's side. I mean, of course he's despicable, but it's so over the top that it's way more entertaining and satisfying to see him win.

Anyway. Tangent. It's very sad IMO that he didn't do more 'serious' stuff on film when he was young, because he is a great actor and was more than pretty enough to land leading man roles. Dancing Queen was so fucking lovely. Too short, but lovely.

Maybe he didn't want to be just another prettyboy?

OP here.

But he was easily capable of both directions at once. That's what bums me out. He stopped showing his range for like 12 years. A lot of people probably don't realise he did more than shouting greasy prats at all.

Kind of like most Americans don't realise Rowan Atkinson isn't just Mr Bean.

I'm half sad Drop Dead Fred wasn't a hit (only half, because as a fan of the actual film- fandom is way better for cult movies, but as a fan of Rik's prettiness...) because if he were doing Hollywood movies he would probably have taken better care of himself and stayed really pretty for like... decades longer. Because even a little bit of extra weight really ages him like I've never seen. Every time he slimmed down it took like ten years off. DDF and Bottom were really close together, and yet.

LORD FLASHHEART FOREVER.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
"She's got a tongue like an electric eel and she likes the taste of a MAN'S tonsils!"

[identity profile] violence4.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
Totally off-topic but I just have to tell you, your icon nearly made me cry with laughter :')

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, thanks! I have no idea why that joke hit me when I saw that screencap, but it needed iconing. ^_^

[identity profile] johnjie.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god I found him so attractive as Lord Flashheart and then spent the rest of the episode kicking myself for falling into the lech's trap (Flashheart's, not Mayall's)

Maybe some actors just focus on acting instead of becoming popular? I seriously doubt he needs your pity, because to be quite honest, that's a bit insulting.
Not everyone has the burning need to be the hottest actor alive.

Even if public likes how you look it isn't a testament of your skills and talent. Case in point: Tom Cruise. Seriously, if I was on a death bed and had to look back on a life such as his, I'd probably kill myself to make things quicker.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Um, wow. When did I say I pitied him? I'm sad because I would have liked to WATCH him in more things and more KINDS of things.

He could've done more and didn't for whatever reason, I think it must have been a choice on his part because he had so much going for him he didn't take advantage of, including his looks (because it helps in the business even if you'd like to think it doesn't matter- it's FAR from the be all and end all, but it helps) and how huge he was after The Young Ones. It disappoints me as a fan because I'd always like to have more stuff to enjoy, but it is his life. I thought this was the place for petty fangirling. Holy shit.

[identity profile] violence4.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
Looking at those pictures and I never realised before that he actually was quite pretty when he was younger. Huh.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you're saying. It's not condescending to think it would've been interesting to see him in dramatic roles as well as his comedic roles. I'd never thought of it before!

Thank you for reminding me of his prettiness. ;D

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe this is one of the reasons he died and became Jesus.

I'm probably sounding stupid here but who the heck is this guy? He seems interesting... and handsome too.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Rik Mayall. He's really fantastic.

start with The Young Ones, it's a british tv show from the 80s that basically inspired The Real World

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you see him in that one episode of Jonathan Creek? I thought he was pretty suave in that...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
Late ass comment now, but on the off chance.

No, I hadn't and thanks so much for the heads up. Was fucking brilliant. I had a huge shit-eating grin for the whole programme- and it's a good show to boot.

It was FANTASTIC to see him get to be the clever one always coming out on top. He doesn't play many heroes.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn`t he even say in an interview that he didn`t feel comfortable being " sexy"? Or at least that he didn`t really like it for whatever reason?
beedekka: Rik Mayall and Pete Richardson in character from 'A Fistful of Traveller's Cheques'. (Paying By Cash?)

[personal profile] beedekka 2012-01-26 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just here to use this icon. How pretty are he and Richardson in it?

Also, Pete Richardson was desperately handsome for a few years and then just suddenly aged by about ninety years... Maybe their whole group wasn't all that 'looks-fixated'? It's kind of an alternative comedy trend to play down your own looks.

[identity profile] ragnarok-hound.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Once again, I'm so late to the party but I sooo know how you feel :(

Rik Mayall had the cheekbones of an underwear model and the cheeky eyes of an incubus. If I were born in the eighties, I'm pretty I'd have had his picture on my wall.

While I think the characters he played were wicked, I wish occasionally he'd let the grotesque face go. Can you imagine what Rick would have been like as a character if less effort had been put into making him look gross? He would have seemed poncier, more vain, and more unconvincing as a guy trying to look middle-class. He was so gorgeous in the pilot and I wish they had kept that look for him (without losing the little pigtails though). But he would also have looked less delusional, I imagine.

He looks like Jonathan Rhys Meyers in this

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly! And yes, his cheekbones. They are to-fucking-die for. In between pulling faces as Kevin Turvey he looks like some elfin sex nymph. And that video: there aren't even words.

I have to say I definitely prefer the version of Rick from his stand up and the pilot, the slightly more chilly (I was going to say more calm, but that's not really it is it lol) personality as well as the stylish clothes. He really looks cool in the pilot, but he's obviously a poseur. I liked that better. I agree it makes more sense with his character as a vain, desperate wannabe. I didn't really enjoy how infantile he became, coinciding roughly with the yellow dungarees.

He might have looked less delusional (though isn't it that he's such a git that really makes him a loser/unattractive?), but even with all Rik's best efforts to be scummy he was still a heartthrob by the end of the series according to Paul Jackson, so there must be only so much you can do to hide bone structure that good. :3
