I've gotta say, I've only been in the fandom for a few weeks, but it is probably the 'warmest' I've ever been in. I've not come across any real wank over shipping etc and when there is a debate over something (the most popular appearing to be "why can't Holmes/Watson be canon in this version?") it's usually discussed intelligently and few resorting to insults or name calling.

I get the OP being annoyed about seeing everyone start fangirling about something they're not into, trust me I've been there. And I avoided this show for a LONG time while everyone else raved about it until I finally saw what the fuss was about. But - it's the friggen' internet. I can just blank it and look at something else.

And in the fandom's defence, they did give us one emotional hell of a finale so no surprise everyone was flipping out for a bit, considering we're most likely gonna have to wait another 18 months until S3. Surely in that time everyone is going to quiet down pretty quickly though just like every fandom does. *shrug*

The Sherlock fandom is fine with each other as a whole, but the way they generally treat fans of the show AND Ritchie movies is horrendous. It's not that they're assholes towards each other, just to anyone who happens to have different preferences in Sherlock Holmeses, but still enjoys the TV show, too.

They're just too hell bent on being the absolute best out of all the Sherlocks, and as a fan of many many adaptations, it's irritating.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I haven't come across that yet, luckily. But then I also love the Granada series and the Ritchie movies the same just on different levels so I wouldn't really have a reason to venture into that sort of wank.

I can see how it would be irritating though, I'm the same with Doctor Who and the constantly annoying "X is the best/worst Doctor, Old Who vs New Who" schtick.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-25 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. Back when the show was first starting out, I was all like "surely the fans have read and watched all the other Sherlock adaptions and books and can appreciate that".

NOPE.

Boy, was I naïve. To this fandom, there's nothing better than this new series and omg it's mind-blowing, everything else sucks in comparison omg omg omg-- Oh. You don't prefer this version? Why are you even here? Somebody convert her!

I always see people talking about how they love both, just differently, or they won't mention the others. So IDK. I know it's out there, I just haven't seen it.

[identity profile] twistedbones.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
You've just seen the good parts of the fandom, then.
There has been some pretty nasty wank already, most recently about Moffat's interpretation of Irene Adler where fans thought it appropriate to tell other fans if they're allowed to be offended or not.
Then there was the whole sexuality!wank where fans dogpiled a group of asexual fans who said they'd prefer to view him asexual and feel uncomfortable with having "omg him and john are fucking" shoved in their faces, wow, that was nasty.
And don't even get me started on some fans' stance on Anderson, Donovan or Mary, who hasn't even appeared yet.

The Sherlock fandom always makes itself out to be the loveliest fandom ever, but there are parts that are a lot more horrible than any other fandom I've been in, mostly because they're so self-righteous or elitist about it.

Not even going to touch the way they keep bothering the writers, I've seldom experienced more secondhand-embarrassement.

[identity profile] violence4.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Bothering the writers? D:

[identity profile] twistedbones.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
A great ton of them think it somehow appropriate to send them NC-17 fic or art, not only to them but also to Martin Freeman's wife. I'm aware that this happens in every fandom but the Sherlock fandom has made a sport out of it, seriously.

Then they continue to ask Mark Gatiss if he ships Sherlock/John because he's gay which just... I won't even touch that.

And then there's the abuse of course. Most recently about the fact that they made some cryptic comment about Mary and a ton of fans started harassing them on twitter along the lines of "HDU SHOVE A WOMAN AT OUR SLASH COUPLE!!!", wow.

[identity profile] violence4.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
also to Martin Freeman's wife

Now I'm actually feeling kind of bad about even watching the show if that's what they have to put up with because of it. That's awful. I've heard of fandom batshit insanity before of course but still D:

[identity profile] fadingtosmoke.livejournal.com 2012-01-25 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
^^ THAT.

That's so fucking terrible. Oh my goodness, never have I felt such strong second-hand embarrassment.

REALLY?! To his WIFE?!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, Amanda Abbington found the stuff on her own and gets a kick out of it. No one showed it to her/forced it on her. Martin had Mark take several photos of him dedicated to girls on Tumbor. Andrew Scott has used the tumblr fandom to get everyone (including me) renting two short film of he's that would likely never have been seen otherwise. If you were IN the fandom, you would know all that. As far as the writer's being tweeted links to fic and art, yes, it's embarrassing, BUT, the writers themselves admit to taking to Twitter with a fierce enthusiasm to promote the fuck out of their show when all of the sudden they realized they had no time or money to do so. This is what you get, a few people probably experiencing fanfic for the first time and tweeting that god damn Alone on the Water fic at Gatiss & Moffat. The author of that fic is thoroughly embarrassed by it and has asked people not to do it.

It's a give and take relationship on the internet, they used it to promote and got back an outpouring of enthusiasm that a few immature apples give a bad name to.

Okaaaaaay, glad I've managed to avoid that so far. 0_o
