Perhaps I used 'girls' wrong. It was two college sophomores in one of my classes.

And I get that it is a common mentality (I blame the whole TRUE LOVE IS CONSUMING A CO-DEPENDENT message that a lot of media sends out), but that doesn't make it right or good, and especially doesn't make it right or good for the media to keep on perpetuating this ideal. And Twilight didn't create this mentality, no, but it is a BIG perpetrator and I actually know some girls (from 14-21!) who dumped their boyfriends because they were so in love with Edward and wanted to meet their own IRL one. It is insanely popular, and normalizes and glorifies the 'All-consuming love' to the point of seriously impacting a whole bunch of girls.

And don't get me wrong, I certainly had my All-consuming romantic fantasies when I was younger. However, my family was quick to point out the differences in real life vs. fantasy and offer me books and other media that didn't reinforce this to carry over into real life. A lot of girls don't have that, and that is why I don't think books like Twilight should be normalized.

And yes, a lot of my feelings are colored by my Aunt being stalked when I was younger, but I think that is why it is so important to point out to people who haven't had those situations in their life what behaviors make that up.
