It depends on the person and how good his or her poetry is. My husband consistently wrote poetry for me and continues to translate poetry that remind him of me from his native language for me, and it continues to be lovely and moving every time he does it. So maybe it's awkward if someone can't write, but I wouldn't call it a universally embarrassing experience.

The teenage guy who wrote the poem for me in English, was Italian. English isn't my first language either and was a lot worse at the time than it is now, but even then I could tell the poem, while heartfelt, didn't translate well into English (I think he probably thought of it in Italian but tried to write it down in English).

Portions of it had some unfortunate undertones and other meanings that made the situation feel even more awkward. I don't think he realized what some of the words meant. A couple of years ago on vacation I was reminded again of the poem because of this old Spanish shop owner who tried to pay me a compliment. Instead of complimenting my looks (I gather this is what he was trying to do), he delivered some crude line no doubt young male tourists from my country tought him (and told him it meant something else!). Basically, instead of saying "You're a beautiful lady", he said what would roughly translate as "You're one hot cunt".

He was older than my dad, and his wife and son were a few feet away. So were my parents. Yeah.

Looking at his face, he had NO IDEA what he just said. No idea. He must have been congratulating himself on his language skills (and charm) he'd picked up from tourists, but needless to say, I was shocked to the core and very embarrassed. I just looked away and said nothing, sparing HIM the embarrassment.

Paying compliments in a language you're not that familiar with? Not always a good idea, is all I'm saying. It's not always romantic and certainly never was in my experience. o.o
