I don't think learning ASL is fetishizing their culture? tbh, I'm sure there are plenty of deaf individuals who would love it if more people were able to communicate with them in that way. You should go for it, OP!

to add to that, my grandmother was deaf from a young age, but she was also Puerto Rican and thus her first language was Spanish. So while she was able to speak (english), read lips and sign, it was really difficult for me as a little kid to understand and communicate with her. If she was still around I would love to use ASL to talk to her, and I still plan on learning eventually.

ITA about the show. I checked out the pilot on Netflix last week expecting a few lulz, and ended up devouring all 10 episodes in a couple of days. Now I'm desperate to see the current episodes but don't have cable, so I'll have to wait. The acting is shockingly good for this type of show, and I'm already attached to the characters.
