I don't think learning ASL is fetishizing their culture? tbh, I'm sure there are plenty of deaf individuals who would love it if more people were able to communicate with them in that way. You should go for it, OP!

Uh I think you're reading too many hyper PC tumblr posts tbqh.

Learning ASL is not fetishizing anything; that's like claiming learning any language is fetishizing cultures. I learned Spanish for shits and giggles and I am glad I did because it is fun and has come in handy! Go for it!

[identity profile] violence4.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Fetishizing their culture? Nah. People are inspired to learn all different languages by their fandoms all the time (me included). I don't see that as fetishizing anyone's culture.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't believe learning a language is fetishization. Just do what you want to do.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that being inspired to learn a language/developing an interest in another culture and having it be a fetish aren't the same thing, and most people realize that.

[identity profile] juliamon.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
You seriously never know when ASL will come in handy, so if you want to learn it, there's no wrong reason.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I would love to learn ASL! I can finger spell, and if we ever have a deaf girl come to the camp I work at, I would be moderately helpful, but if I could actually sign...

So, yeah, I'm going to learn ASL as soon as I can, but I didn't realize that was "fetishizing" it, and I think if anyone is actually saying that, they need to learn what fetishizing actually means. :|

I also want to learn German and Swahili- German we have at school, Swahili... I'm not sure. But isn't learning new languages so much fun?

/is weird.

There's never a bad reason to learn a new language! If that's what you wanna do, go for it!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I've been interested in ASL for years, and, if I'd ever been someplace that would have offered a class in it, I would have taken it in a heartbeat. I started watching Switched at Birth, because I honestly couldn't NOT watch a show called "Switched at Birth," and it sparked my interest again.

Wanting to learn the language is not "fetishizing" it. (But the fangirls who just want to meet a "nice Deaf boy like Emmett" are...but that's a whole other issue.)

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
As others have said, no bad reason to learn a language!

On another note- my sister actually is majoring in ASL after having back problems and not being able to go into dance. She was interested in it since we were kids, as mom had a picture book about sign language for us to read and try to learn a bit. I remember how much she loved flipping through those pages. And then this show came out when she was having back problems, and I think it helped remind her of the love she had for it. (And btw, no one in our family is deaf.)

I think having a passion for something is never bad. Fetishizing is to devoid the subject of its humanity, either by making it to be perfect or picking away pieces that you like and ignoring the rest.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Learning a new language is never a bad thing.

[identity profile] making-excuses.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Basically the only reason to why I watch Switched at birth is because of the signing, it is fun seeing the difference between the American signs and the Norwegian ones, also I have broadened my vocab because of it...

And signing is useful, I use it all the time, I don't actually have any deaf friends, but I use it on my friends and they get some of it, also I usually spell my name in sign language when I introduce myself...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I love that show!
Also, I'm in second year ASL at my school and it's awesome.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with learning ASL, but I must warn you that you'll have to get involved in deaf culture for the education to be effective, and it... basically gets less and less pleasant the more you dig.

And that's seriously the nicest thing I've been able to say about deaf culture in years.

Love this show!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously? Fetishizing?

I am so tired of people calling interest in cultures, lifestyles, and what the fuck ever fetishizing. It isn't, and unless you're being super weird in a way that your secret doesn't show, you are not fetishizing deaf culture.

Here, a dictionary definition of fetish for everyone:
Fetish-
1. an object regarded with awe as being the embodiment or habitation of a potent spirit or as having magical potency.
2. any object, idea, etc., eliciting unquestioning reverence, respect, or devotion: to make a fetish of high grades.
3. Psychology. any object or nongenital part of the body that causes a habitual erotic response or fixation.

Wanting to learn a damn language is not an example of fetishizing a culture unless you intend to assign the culture religious significance, adore it in a freakishly intense way, or develop a sexual fixation that precludes your enjoyment of sexual activity not involving that culture.

TL;DR: You're fine, OP. It's okay to want to learn about other cultures and languages solely because you're interested in them.

Member of deaf culture here (specifically a KODA), please learn ASL. It helps in the little ways (plus, you can gossip with people from across rooms if your eyesight is better than mine :P)

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
...Well, that's just weird. I, for one, was totally not sitting at my desk watching this show on my lunch hour today and practicing the signs. No. (I learned "lying," "money" and "motorcycle" today!) HATERS TO THE LEFT. I don't think it's fetishizing it at all, I think it's making it accessible and interesting to people who might not otherwise know about it.

(ugh Daphne LeClerc be my girlfriend wontcha please)

[identity profile] clodia-risa.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know how old you are, but a friend of mine learned ASL at a local high school for the deaf and was asked to help chaperone a few of the dances, etc. Take a class! You'll find opportunities to use it if you're involved in that community.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
What's with all this "fetishizing their culture" stuff popping up? It's not just this secret, I've seen it on F!S pertaining to a whole bunch of different concepts and practices. I don't get it. How is being interested in sign language fetishizing their culture? Deaf people use sign language. It's not something they have sole jurisdiction over FFS. They probably wish MORE people knew ASL, so they could have a better chance of meeting someone they can communicate easily with. If you think ASL is cool, learn it. You're not taking anything away from deaf people. Hell, it might come in really handy some day.

I've been meaning to watch this show, but I missed the first season when it was on. Is it on hulu or anywhere online (legally)?

Another show, if you can find it, that you might be interested in is Sue Thomas, F.B.Eye, which is based on a true story, and I really enjoyed.

And yes, take ASL. It's useful to have, and not nearly enough hearing people learn it, even if you don't go for interpreter certification (which is what I want to do, once I get enough money to go back to college). If you do any sort of customer service-type work with the public, you'll never know when it might be useful, and I've found that most Deaf people tend to be quite grateful to not have to write everything down.

Deaf people love it when there are hearing people who actually make an effort to communicate with them. AND, there are a ton of opportunities for interpretation jobs, especially in the medical community. Look into it.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
There have to be hearing people who know ASL or else there wouldn't be ASL translators for the deaf. You need to be able to hear what's being said if you're a translator.
If you're really serious about studying it, you could develop a really useful skill that is helpful to deaf people who want to attend something requiring a translator (a class, a play, a presentation, etc) and which could pretty much guarantee you a job due to its rarity among the hearing.
