Seriously? Fetishizing?

I am so tired of people calling interest in cultures, lifestyles, and what the fuck ever fetishizing. It isn't, and unless you're being super weird in a way that your secret doesn't show, you are not fetishizing deaf culture.

Here, a dictionary definition of fetish for everyone:
Fetish-
1. an object regarded with awe as being the embodiment or habitation of a potent spirit or as having magical potency.
2. any object, idea, etc., eliciting unquestioning reverence, respect, or devotion: to make a fetish of high grades.
3. Psychology. any object or nongenital part of the body that causes a habitual erotic response or fixation.

Wanting to learn a damn language is not an example of fetishizing a culture unless you intend to assign the culture religious significance, adore it in a freakishly intense way, or develop a sexual fixation that precludes your enjoyment of sexual activity not involving that culture.

TL;DR: You're fine, OP. It's okay to want to learn about other cultures and languages solely because you're interested in them.

Thank you for perfectly articulating my thoughts. I'm fucking sick of seeing people calling a mere interest in something different a fetishization. I am all for social justice but give me a break.

We're all going to be as equal as possible, while never, ever mingling or expressing interest in each other. Ever.

Equal but separate, that's the SJ motto!

Weird. For all the SJ-talk about cultural appropriation stuff, I've only ever heard this kind of overzealous use of 'fetishization' from people who are either fairly indifferent to social justice or in actively in the "fuck the PC police I can use slurs if I want to" crowd.

Agreed. Thank you.
