As others have said, no bad reason to learn a language!

On another note- my sister actually is majoring in ASL after having back problems and not being able to go into dance. She was interested in it since we were kids, as mom had a picture book about sign language for us to read and try to learn a bit. I remember how much she loved flipping through those pages. And then this show came out when she was having back problems, and I think it helped remind her of the love she had for it. (And btw, no one in our family is deaf.)

I think having a passion for something is never bad. Fetishizing is to devoid the subject of its humanity, either by making it to be perfect or picking away pieces that you like and ignoring the rest.
