Why would you major in Asian Studies if you weren't a weeaboo?

Seriously. The only major more useless is probably philosophy.

Useless if you want to get that super secure high-paying engineer job, sure. If you're just genuinely interested in going the international way after college, such as to be an ESL teacher, it's a fine major.

I wouldn't suggest it to someone who's getting a degree just for job security, but for people who want to explore the world a little, Asian Studies is a great start for that, and makes an excellent basis for graduate studies.

I have a friend who got his degree in Japanese language, and has been certified to the first ranking in fluency. Yes, he initially started taking Japanese in high school through anime, but he now has a very nice-paying job as a translator at a company in Seattle, who has sent him on extended trips to Japan at least twice, to do translating for their Japanese side. I think he's done work for city-government over there as well on one of his trips, translating documents for a sister city delegation that would be coming.

If you live in an area with heavy Asian population/influence/connections, it can be quite a lucrative major.

Getting a degree in a language is a lot different than taking a general Asian Studies major, since Asia is a pretty big place.

/is an East Asian Studies major

I think most places make you choose to focus on one culture (though you also learn about others), and then study their language and history in depth. And IDK about other countries, but I have people CONSTANTLY badgering me as to when I will achieve fluency in my chosen language(s) because they just happen to need somebody for whatevering.

If you're fluent in Japanese and english, getting a job teaching english in japan is a pretty cable option, also if you're a semi-attractive girl being a hostess apparently pays well, too.

or you just like learning for learning's sake. What is wrong with studying for the joy of learning something new? When did education become yet another bean-counting exercise. Bring back classical education, and compulsory Latin and Ancient Greek lessons, for all. Keep the bean-counting exercises out of schools and universities!

Chiming in late as a Classical Languages major to say thank you for your support of Latin and Attic Greek.

Vale!
