No. Liking things is Internet Treason, and the penalty is death.

Perfect comment+icon combo.

the internet has no subtlety, OP. if a few people who eat, sleep, and breathe X are crazy turdbrains, ALL people who like X to ANY DEGREE must be batshit insane entire-nervous-systems-comprised-of-diarrhea. because, you know. dividing things into black and white that much isn't ALSO FUCKING CRAZY.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
bwahahaha

i'm gonna be using 'batshit insane entire nervous systems comprised of diarrhea' from now on

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Subcultures will be judged by their examples, not their best, and there are a lot of bat-shit crazy weeaboos out there.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oops, this is supposed to mean "Subcultures will be judged by their examples".

Ugh, I know that look you're talking about. My only regret from my weeaboo days(aside from the painfully embarrassing memories)is that I can't mention anything slightly animeish without getting that dumb smirk from the people who grew up with me.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I get that and I never did any of the broken Japanese, "Kawaii~~~" stuff either. Damn.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel, OP. My brothers call me a weeaboo just because every now and then I go on an anime/manga kick and took Japanese for two years in middle/high school (which was about 10 years ago).

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel, every time I mention I'm studying Japanese people are like, "Oh, do you want to move there and draw anime?" No. No, I do not. -_-

But as far as the people who throw weeaboo around casually as a synonym for anyone who likes anime... just ignore them, who cares what the hobby police think?

And I was kind of confused about why you don't want to tell Japanese girls... is it because you're afraid they'll think you're one of those creeps who obsesses over trying to find an authentic nihonjin girlfriend or something? If that's the case, maybe just... wait to mention it until you get to know them and they see that you don't treat Japanese people different from everyone else? I guess that's kinda hard, though, since "What's your major?" is one of the first getting-to-know-you questions that gets asked, but either way, if you can prove by your actions that you're not a creep and that you don't only want to talk to them because of their Asian-ness, hopefully it won't be a big deal.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I know that feel. I speak japanese and I read manga on occasion (not often and not many), and I'll watch an anime per season (last year it was madoka, tiger and bunny, and penguin drum).
I rarely ever bring it up in conversation, even with fandom friends, and yet I know several irl friends who still think of me as "the weeaboo" even though they watch way more anime than me, and they are really annoying about the ones they like, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, hey, Anon, I'm watching Madoka right now! I just finished Penguindrum last month.

/cool story bro

Haters gonna hate, man. Just do what makes yourself happy.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of it is the crab bucket effect. Your putting an effort into learning something unusual, you must be pulled down and prevented from bettering yourself. You must be part of the herd, you must not be different. Its sad really, but a mob hates to see people learning more than it.

[identity profile] tamabonotchi.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
If you're not one of the actual weebs I read in the horror stories, kindly correct that person and tell them there are regular fans of everything.
And you don't spout Japanese at the end of your sentences.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
One of the horrible things (or hilarious things, depending on your point of view) of learning another language, particularly if you are training yourself to think in that language, is that vocab can bleed into your daily conversations. My friends found it hilarious when I was learning French and Czech because halfway through sentences I'd suddenly switch languages without realising (I think the funniest time was when I accidentally started off in Czech before finishing in French, only hitting English mid-sentence). If it is a socially acceptable language it is fine, but if it is in a language its socially acceptable to mock, like Japanese (and Spanish, when I was young, learning Spanish was seen as mockable) starting in English and accidentally switching vocab is a fast ticket to being abused.

Its sad people trying to learn, even if it is sometimes in a clumsy and piecemeal fashion, another language are made fun of. I wonder how many people were turned off languages because of this.

Why would you major in Asian Studies if you weren't a weeaboo?

Seriously. The only major more useless is probably philosophy.

I'm a senior in the Japanese major, and I happen to enjoy the nerdier side of things as well, but after you continue down the path of the Japanese/Asian Studies a little bit, you start to realize how little it does to worry about that kind of stuff. Seriously, nobody who matters actually cares! To be honest most regular students won't treat you like this (unless maybe you dress in a way that looks fannish, like wearing anime t-shirts or something); in fact the only people who have ever attacked me for what I choose to study have been people in fandom. (A Western comic fandom, full of people who totally were into manga at one point but then decided they're ~far too mature~ for that. HA.)

As you begin to make connections with professors, do your study abroad, meet Japanese exchange students...you'll realize that liking otaku stuff is a perfectly acceptable pastime with young people these days in Japan. Almost every 20-something-year-old Japanese person I know reads One Piece or Bakuman, and many of them are familiar with NicoNicoDouga memes and Vocaloid and the like. Japanese people may ask if you like anime, because they have heard that many Westerners become interested in their culture because of this, but usually they're pretty happy about it, and are just honestly curious how you got interested in their country. I don't know any Japanese people who have even the slightest concept of "weeaboo" or "wapanese", it all seems to come from the Westerners who like nerdy things themselves!

So basically just relax. I don't know if you've been to Japan before or not, but I think once you have, and hang out with a lot of young people there, I think you'll realize how silly it was to worry all along. The only people chastising you are the ones who aren't worth listening to anyways, like the annoying bully kids in middle school.

I'm only taking a 10-week community center Japanese class, and oh God I sympathize so much. I do have legitimate, non-weeb reasons for it, but on the first day of class I ended up pretending I knew nothing about Japanese...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
It depresses me that I'm seen as a weaboo because I'm taking Japanese classes to learn a language I'm genuinely interested in (even if I'll probably only use it in order to understand my favorite anime and celebrity interviews) and yet it's seen as perfectly okay to learn the language to go to Japan and pick up Japanese girls (which seems to be why 80% of the guys are even in the class).

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm majoring in Asian Studies as well, and you know what? I no longer want to tell people what I study. I don't want to be classified as a weeboo. What's worse, my own weeboo-ish classmates have made me stop enjoying anime/manga as well. Doing it wrong much?

You're not alone, OP. :(

I'm in the exact same boat anon, and I know exactly where you're coming from. I'm afraid to introduce myself as an Asian Studies major because I can almost hear the judgement.
It really doesn't help peoples opinions when I sit in front of a kid that wears a Pikachu hoodie and carries a Kirara plush around ALL THE TIME, because since I'm an Asian Studies major who likes anime and Japanese and Korean tv I must be a weaboo like that kid. I really just want to graduate quickly so I can go teach English in China
