[Big Wolf on Campus]

hee, that's okay. You can like Lori better and it doesn't make you a terrible feminist. It might make you kind of a bad one if you HATED Stacy simply for being so girly, but you don't seem to, she's just not your favourite. That's cool.

(and yay, Big Wolf on Campus!)

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I preferred Lori to Stacy, mainly because Lori (in addition to kicking ass) actually got to learn Tommy's secret. The way they kept preventing Stacy from finding out annoyed the living heck out of me.

Might I add: "Evil Werewolf Syndicate. How may I direct your call?"

It's fine to dislike Stacy, watching it it seems like the writers had ideas for 4 very different female characters and only one actress so they just kind of forced her into whatever role they needed and she never really developed as a character.

Where as Lori was allowed to be one character. Also, I'm pretty sure BWOC was made before AssKicker became quite such a 'cliche' female role.

I've never thought of it like that before. That would explain a lot.

BWOC was from about the same time as Buffy (there was that "Muffy the Werewolf Slayer" episode), so that would have been when AssKicker was becoming a more mainstream role for women in fantasy/horror/sci-fi TV. And I liked that Lori started out as a love interest, but morphed into their best friend. Usually it's the reverse, and I love BWOC for subverting that even if part of me still ships Tommy/Lori

I don't get (and am really getting annoyed at) this notion that you're a bad feminist because you like a character who isn't a shining feminist role model better than one who is. All people have flaws, and feeling that you're "supposed" to like someone because they're less flawed than another person is just...ugh. It's like saying the character's personality doesn't matter, only how perfect and unflawed they are. Isn't feminism supposed to be about how women can be (and like) whoever the fuck they want to be?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think the notion creates this perception that only one kind of female character is acceptable, which limits female characters and renders them down to their gender anyway. So...it annoys me. No offense to anybody. That's just how I see it.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. I knew something about this obsession with being in line with perfect feminist ideology, even though human beings are flawed and obviously can't be perfect embodiments of feminist ideology no matter how hard they try, was skeeving me out in some really familiar way. Now I know why -- it's because it's almost exactly like antifeminist gender restriction/oppression, except with different criteria for acceptable female behavior.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Not familiar with the source, but isn't OP trying to say the opposite? That s/he's being a bad feminist BECAUSE s/he likes the more "badass" character better? Instead of seeing both characters as equals despite choosing different life roles?

That's how I read it.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I just got off-topic ;) Still the same general idea though.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think so.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know the show, but it's not a problem if you prefer one character type to another. As long as you don't compare them and say the one you like was the better female character, it's fine. Just respect that women have different personality/interests and they're not obligated to act a certain way to be acceptable(though you seem to get that).

[identity profile] crimsongypsy.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Firstly, HUZZAH BIG WOLF SECRET!

Now that that's out of the way. Lori was a better character than Stacy. Stacy was terribly one dimensional and had no real point in the show besides being the thing Tommy lusted after. She had some better traits every once in a while but she was rather one note.
Lori wasn't a shining example of a better female character but she at least seemed to do more and to be a bigger more integral part of the show. It wasn't all about "are they dating" (ignoring the kiss thing at the end of season 2). I dunno she had more personality and was a better character. And you're not a bad feminist

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
BWOC!! I loved that show when it was on. Still do. I wish they would just release it on DVD already. Yeesh.

I also like Lori better, but then, she was a real character. Stacey was just the unattainable goddess with no flaws. Though I did feel bad for her; she liked this guy who kept disappearing and ditching her and she never found out why. That must have been frustrating beyond belief. But at least she didn't let Tommy hold her back. I was really glad they gave her a good reason for leaving instead of some "she transfered. Don't ask questions. Shut up."

[identity profile] iteari.livejournal.com 2012-01-27 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think the more un-feminist thing would be to deride Stacey for not being feminine like Lori. I mean, wouldn't it be an asshole thing to deride Lori for not being girly like Stacey? If people can get that the latter is bad, why not the former?

The number one thing I learned in becoming a feminist is that there is no wrong way to be female, there is no wrong way to have a female body.

P.S.

I read fic where Lori met up with Stacey and they made out. And I ship them next to Merton and Tommy. Anyone else?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Feminism is about equality between men and women. THAT'S ALL.

It doesn't make you a bad feminist for preferring a character like Lori over Stacy, and vice versa. Hell, it doesn't make you a bad feminist if you prefer a male character over a female character.

It makes me sad when people don't grasp the real concept about feminism :/ Totally not blaming you, OP, I just want to tell you that your ideas about feminism are a bit off.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

this forever. You like the badass character? Fine. You like the girly gurl character? Fine, too. That's the good thing about feminism, you get to pick your likes and your dislikes and your rolemodels for yourself. Whoever told you anything different, OP, was wrong.

Holy crap I miss that show so much! And it led me to Danny Smith's band City Drive which is equally as amazing
