That said, I think he and Elena were probably adorable childhood sweethearts back in the day and I honestly felt bad for the guy about how badly fate shafted him on the mother/sister front. HOWEVER he's one of the few characters I legit liked better in season one vs currently, unlike say Tyler (who started off the series on the get-hit-by-a-bus-already-jackass end of the character scale and then proceeded to jump back and forth on the likeability scale like he was the hopped up on the drug of the week, not Vikki), Liz (well intentioned and very, very wrong but is willing to learn/change), and Caroline (who I couldn't stand originally but now adore).
...Which is odd, really, because I generally love the 'average Joe next door' guy.
