Each to his (or her) own I guess, I never got the big deal about having to like the same things as my friends, we watch some of the same shows, I recommend stuff to my friends and if they don't like it so be it, I don't like everything they like either... (and vice versa)

It's okay not to like things, blah blah blah. I recommend you tell them you don't like it, but if your reason is just a general "not clicking for me" thing, give them some made-up specific personal excuse, like, say, you don't find Barney's assholery entertaining because you knew a real guy like him in school. I once pretended I couldn't stand Chandler/Monica because they reminded me of my divorced aunt and uncle to get out of watching Friends, even though I have no problem with Chandler/Monica -- I just wasn't interested in the show and knew people would leave me alone if they thought I had a personal problem. But if you say "eh, I just don't enjoy it", I know from personal experience that devoted fans will probably spend a lot of time trying to convince you to like it (like I'm actively holding myself back from doing right now, lol :)) and that'll just be a pain.

Anyway, next season's almost certainly its last, so if the above is a stupid idea...soldier through?

What kind of friends/acquaintances did you have that it mattered so much if you didn't want to watch one of their shows (outside the predetermined watching time)? I mean, I understand if they watch the show and you want to come over during that time, and you know they watch it, then you'll have to sit through it too - but I would presume you wouldn't go if you didn't like a show so much and knew it was their time to watch it?

I watch this show solely because I love the Marshall/Lily stuff. I pretty much don't care for the rest. One of my RL friends really jumped at me for that.
Eh, I don't get why disliking a sitcom (or only liking two characters in my case) is such a big deal to some people :/

There are plenty of things that I like that my friends don't and vice versa. Your friendship shouldn't be contingent upon whether or not you like this one sitcom. If so, your friends suck.

Meh. As a Buffy fan I always felt I should like this show. But I can't. In fact, I just plain hate it.

I'm sorry your friends wouldn't accept you not liking it, anon. It's a great show for me (at least it will be when Barney/Robin finally stop being pulled around by the writers) but everyone's tastes are different; you not liking it doesn't mean they can't. I'm sorry your friends are not more mature. :(

I don't like the show either, OP. It doesn't make me laugh, and I don't care about any of the characters.

But there's nothing wrong with friends not liking the same things!

Well, not liking different things is predicated on a two-way social contract:

You don't go on and on and on about what you like to someone you know doesn't care about it, without expecting them to snap at you at some point; and

You don't jump on a friend who brings up what they like once or twice, reasonably, with a screed on how awful and stupid and lame it is.

As long as friends are willing to abide by these, I don't get how differences in entertainment taste are a problem, you know?
