[Black Lagoon]

The is downright insulting and pathetic.

When Hansel started outright crying while he bled to death in front of Balalaika, my heart broke. He wasn't a villain anymore, but a scared little boy and Balalaika's scolding him for crying made it all the worse. Those two were the most tragic villains in Black Lagoon.

Reading can be far less visceral than seeing and hearing, even if it is an anime. And if you knew that you were going to be reading about child prostitution, you would have had the chance to prepare yourself mentally and compartmentalize it. Watching the anime, you weren't expecting it, so it got through to you in a more personal way, and then all that previously abstract and academic knowledge you had just became more "real" and humanized.

[/my armchair diagnosis of this]

It sounds right to me. The printed word is just some unknown 'other' that just sort of exists out there in that dark dead world, but the characters in the show are visceral.
And I'm with OP - I'd gladly watch any other part of Black Lagoon again but I don't think I'll ever re-watch the Hansel and Gretel arc.

I agree. Not saying that makes the stories of real victims any less horrific of course, but it's true that there's a lot of terrible experiences that people on the outside just can't comprehend because they never experienced it themselves. If it's being presented to you and actually happening to characters you like, I can completely understand getting affected by it.

Gosh, something like that happened to me today. I was halfway through a Supernatural fanfic where, among other things, Raphael captures Castiel. When I went to have my coffee I decided to first browse the news on my iPhone before going to my fanfic. There was a news item about torture victims in Libya's prisons and how Doctors Without Borders had given up on them. By itself the news item didn't disturb me that much but when I switched to the fanfic my bookmark was right in the middle of a scene where Raphael was torturing Castiel. I suddenly felt ill. No matter how much I tried to convince myself this was a story and not a recounting what happened in a Libyan prison I couldn't.

(Disclaimer: I don't know the series) It doesn't seem that strange to me that you'd find it easier to empathize with characters you were attached to than articles. Reading personal accounts, even horrific personal accounts, does have a few extra degrees of separation-- you don't usually see their faces, know them as a person, or see them framed within the context of the situation (like I'm assuming this screenshot is?)

I'm vaguely disturbed that you completely skipped the child snuff porn part.
