Since you brought it up: I have yet to read Sherlock fic, but I'm scared to wade through tons of bad!fic before getting to the good stuff.

I don't know if disgustingly long fic is your thing but it's honestly the only kind of fic I can ever read and enjoy, so here are some novel-length fics that I highly highly highly recommend:

Firstly, Two Two One Bravo Baker. AU where John and Sherlock meet in Afghanistan 3 years before they actually canonically meet. Brilliantly written and filled to the brim with smut.

Secondly, School for Scandal. AU where John and Sherlock are gay highschoolers at a largely homophobic all-boys boarding school. Also brilliantly written (if a bit under-edited) and also filled to the brim with smut.

SfS isn't finished yet.

Lastly, Making the Connection. AU where John is a phone-sex-line-worker and Sherlock is bored. Again, beautifully written (the prose is simply amazing), and, of course, also extremely porny.

MtC isn't finished either. I actually probably like this one the least, because I don't really like the way Sherlock was written, but ymmv. Also this one sex scene kinda put me off because john and sherlock were roleplaying a guy and a bird man in the desert and it was really fucking weird but strangely arousing at the same time. idk? either way I wish I had half the talent of sir/madame jessamygriffith, the author.

wordstrings — she's written a very, very popular series based on the premise that Sherlock really is the sociopath he claims to be. It makes him a little OOC, but it works fantastically, and I really enjoyed it. Her masterlist's the first post on her journal.

irisbleufic has also written quite a lot of excellent Sherlock fic, and is currently working on a new chaptered series. Her masterlist's also the first post on her journal.

etothepii is very well-known, especially for their AUs. You can find their masterlist here (http://etothepii.dreamwidth.org/1208.html).

You can check

sherlockbigbang for some excellent, long stories.

Lanning's 26 Pieces (http://archiveofourown.org/works/244826) is probably my favourite S/J case!fic. Parallel (http://archiveofourown.org/works/205389) is also very well-known, as well as The Infiltrate Series (http://archiveofourown.org/series/11392).

There's some great gen, such as Sonata Form (http://paisley-pie.livejournal.com/3387.html) or Captain Sherlock Holmes of the Good Ship Borealis (http://archiveofourown.org/works/318947), which is set during Sherlock's childhood. That last one is written by

what_alchemy, who is also one of the best authors in fandom.

And if you're looking for post-Reichenbach stories: BlackEyedGirl's Minds Like Ours Dream Up (http://archiveofourown.org/works/322639) has become the one classic everybody comes back to, but I'd also advice you to read Full English (http://archiveofourown.org/works/323869) and I Don't Know What Else To Do (http://archiveofourown.org/works/322789), respectively from John and from Sherlock's point of view during the Hiatus. There's also this excellent WIP (http://archiveofourown.org/works/324584?view_full_work=true).

There's tons more, of course, and you can always skim through
