Yeah, that's the issue. I love Bertinelli. I like Wayne. I'm not interested in DC using either to sell me a new character.

The point of the secret is that we shouldn't be upset because "it acts like Bertinelli, who cares if she's Wayne". The character has a different past, different relationships and different stories. That's why I think this sucks.

Different anon here, but I agree. Changing the character's past, relationships, and stories was what made it hard for me to accept Helena Bertinelli at first.

I grew up reading All Star Comics and Helena Wayne's back-up series in Wonder Woman in the 80s and was really upset when they killed her on COIE. I picked up the first two issues of the 1989 series and couldn't get into it because it wasn't the Huntress I grew up with. It wasn't until her inclusion into Birds of Prey that I actually started to warm up to her.

Yeah, I got into comics by the time Bertinelli was Huntress, but I completely understand why you wouldn't like her at first considering how Wayne was treated.

I'm going to third this by saying DC has had an overall shitty track record with this character in general. Like the previous anon said, Helena Wayne was offed despite being really popular with fans at the time, and I can't say Bertinelli was treated any better by DC most notably throughout the 90s.

For the most part whenever I read stories with her from that era, it seriously feels as though writers didn't really know what to do with this character since her solo series concluded, and liked emphasising that she was this "borderline sociopath" that even the hero community shunned. I think that if it wasn't for writers like Greg Rucka and Gail Simone who actually liked and fleshed this character out more, there wouldn't have been much of a break in that cycle. :/

I agree. And I never understood why Helena was such a black sheep when there are other superheroes that are way worse :/

There's also the fact that writers also seemed to forget that she was also a teacher who very much looked after her students and cared for their well being. If she had a student in her class who was a victim of abuse, she would go out of her way to take care of the child's abuser. I think she had a Christmas story written about that, but the point is, it annoyed me shitless when this wasn't acknowledged.

I LOVE that part of her history. Female teachers in fiction usually get a lot of crap and the fact that we have one superheroine that could teach was awesome.

I hate DC sometimes :(
