it's odd to me and it might be a language thing because I never considered "freak" to be that much of an insult? Or is the definition still related to "freakshow" for instance and basically dehumanizing the person you're calling that name? The dub for that show translated what she says to "taré" which is...very mean, so I wonder if it has the same connotation in english :V
(sorry if that sounded like a silly question ;;)
BUT YES, fandom at its finest :/

I think it's a regional/generational thing. In some places I've been it's still connected to freakshow, but in others it's sort of benign, along the lines of dweeb.

In fandom, of course, it is the worst insult ever if directed at the pretty male lead.

Hm, could be! That's an issue I have with a lot of the debate on words characters use on each other because different generations and places will have different interpretations for it.

"In fandom, of course, it is the worst insult ever if directed at the pretty male lead. "
Yeaaah, while I think there are valid grounds to find her attitude towards Sherlock off-putting, the "oh poor baby gorgeous sherlock sally you fucking monster" thing is...eh.

Round where I live, it's still associated with 'freakshow' and it's pretty much harshly calling someone an outcast. Just emphasizing how much they don't fit in and in a very malicious way. It's quite insulting. But yea, translations of regional insults can lose the effect.

[identity profile] vivi314.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
In this case then I think they did a good job with translating, because taré is associated with genetic defects and is a pretty strong way to label someone as different in a harsh way.

But yeah, I get why people would find her attitude as bad as Sherlock's.

The reason I dislike her and take offense with her behavior more is because she really acts like she's a better person that Sherlock is. Sherlock doesn't hide the fact that he thinks he's smarter than everyone else but he doesn't think he's a better person in any other way IMO. In fact, he knows he's deficient in terms of the majority of 'human' characteristics. Donovan acts like she's so much better than Sherlock and then she acts in such a petty way, instead of actually being the better person. It just makes her look like a fool and that's what bugs me. Now if Sherlock acted like he was smarter than everyone and tried to make people look stupid while he himself was always wrong or making mistakes, then I would feel the same about him in that regard.

[identity profile] vivi314.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I...actually don't see it that way, haha. YMMV, I didn't see Sally as acting like she was better, but mostly at having a bit of a grudge against Sherlock who indeed thinks he's so smart, and who barges in and does the job she (according to personal interpretation) worked very hard for; she seems to have very different views and a very different relationship with crime scenes and investigations compared to Sherlock, thus the clashes. It's not pretty and often petty, but I kind of see where she's coming from?
As someone who often relates to Sherlock on other things, I also think his way of showing Sally's relationship with Anderson was downright dickish; of course, you could think that it's him getting back to her, but that didn't sit right with me either :')
Anyhow, I think we can agree to disagree; I don't even disagree on the fact that she may have a lapse of judgement.

Haha thinking about it, the fact that people are so divided on her may show either the absolute inconsistency due to the contrary things she might do or the downright brilliance in her writing due to how ambiguously she stands.

I just don't see her behavior as that of a mature adult. I'm 21 and I don't act that way. She's supposed to be a professional. I didn't even act like that when I was a pre-teen. Seeing an adult act that way--an adult who should know better, be dignified and take the high road, and who's supposed to be 'normal,' unlike Sherlock who is socially deficient--it just grates on me so hard.

I absolutely did see him saying that as getting back at her. She was badmouthing him to someone he liked, someone she hadn't even know for five minutes, trying to smear him and again acting like she was somehow better, all the while she's carrying on an affair with a married man. No doubt that it was Sherlock airing info he shouldn't have but I can't say she didn't deserve it.

We don't really see enough of her to know for sure. I think that's most of the reason why she annoys me whenever she shows up; we don't get enough development to go deeper on her so her snarking with Sherlock is all we see. We never see any of her other sides. (That's also probably another reason why people will let Sherlock's stuff slide more than hers.)

Regarding outing her affair with Anderson, she might have seen it as a deliberately malicious act, but as he says himself, he can't just turn it off. The only person he seems to tone it down for at all is John, and even then it's not a lot.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
he can't turn it off but he does have the option of not opening his mouth to share especially when it's something he knows won't be appreciated.

he makes the decision to be that dick just as much as she does.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
'Freak' is certainly very dehumanizing if you get it constantly, and the dismissive tone doesn't help.
