This question...feels kind of vague to me, so I'm not sure if this information is actually going to be helpful to you or not. I'm going to try, though! (Also, I'm not sure if you meant that you just haven't written fanfiction, or fiction in general, and I'm operating on the assumption that you meant writing stories period. Please forgive me if I'm incorrect in this assumption.)

Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but for me, I just end up with ideas that I want to see happen (or take hold of an idea someone else has given), and start writing it. I generally begin with scenes or dialogue that I have a clear picture of, and just tend to fill in from there. Then again, I tend to skip around on pretty much everything I write, so.

As far as the bits that I don't have planned out already when I start writing something, usually I just try to play out the scene in my head and decide where it might go from there or what events might lead up to the situation.

Honestly, there are a lot of things to take into account when you're writing something - different authors have varied styles, and different readers prefer different styles. Some keep things minimalistic, depending on dialogue and short actions to carry their story; others could write pages upon pages of description of location, characters, the lamp, etc. What type is better, again, partially depends on what the author's preference is, but also depends on what sort of fic you're writing.

...anyway. tl;dr, starting with what you're certain about, and then filling in transitions and descriptions and anything else that might need it is the method that works for me.

Thanks! I have tried to write fiction before but not much, and I've only made paltry attempts at fanfiction, so I'm pretty inexperienced. I'm more of a visual artist than a writer, so it's a really weak point for me. Your comment really did help me though, thanks a lot!
