ok but since when do you get to decide what is and is not poetry

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Fucking agreed. Good poetry is hard; I'd even go out on a limb and say it's harder to write than good fic (and I write fic and not poetry, so this isn't coming from a point of bias.)

Bad poetry or so-so poetry, however, is easy as shit, and reads like properly formatted nonsense, if that. Since fandom has and probably always will attract a younger crowd, I can see why fandom poetry is so prevalent and so bad. Anybody can write a decent fic. It takes years upon years to learn how to write decent poetry.

Um well...
though you find it
to be
nothing
there is something
called blank verse!

A haiku seems plain
but there is more to find, bro
just embrace fandom

A lso, fans just want to write
B e open minded to other things
C ause you won't stop them from
D oing what they want with their time
E verybody has their own thing
F rom which they find happiness
G o forth now and let them be or
H aters gonna hate
I dk, that's all I got.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
A++

The haiku is especially awesome.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the poetry lesson. I know what blank verse is.

There is blank verse
and
then
there are
random line breaks with no sense
of
rhythm
or
depth
or anything,
just trite
attempts
at art.

...I feel like that wheezing kid from Malcom in the Middle trying to re-read that. If that's all it takes to make a poem, he was the master for free verse!

[identity profile] squicked-out.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Then, there is butthurt
Which you seem to have much of
My condolences

blank verse =/= free verse

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL I hate reading poetry in general. Listening to it is okay sometimes when the reader is good, but reading it is just so boring to me. Anyway, one time this horribly cheesy, poorly-rhymed poem became sooo popular in my fandom and got tons of praise and it made me go "Seriously? >_>" But, I didn't say anything. If people like it, good for them, and if the author had fun writing it I guess that's all that matters.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Modern poetry says otherwise about the line breaks thing.

Although I will say that it does annoy me when people throw line breaks in for no reason, but at times they can be used well. The create tension, sound, etc. However, that is the difference between being a good or bad poet, rather than writing poetry vs. not.

I personally prefer form poetry, my favorite ones to write being the villenelle. Although I have gone into modern poetry langauge at time. Depends on the poem itself, really. (My favorite thing to do is to take the beats of my favorite song and write poetry to match the beats. It's fun!)

As for writing poetry about a specific thing in fandom, I have always felt... meh about it. The issue is that poetry is supposed to transcend borders. It either tells it's own story, or it bypasses the story to communicate emotions. When those emotions are about a fictional character that does not itself transcend things, then it is very hard to relate to or to interpret in different manners, both things which are hallmarks of poetry.

That is why mythology is such a popular tool for poets, becasue it is something that most people will recognize. It transcends time and culture, and is very primal in how it connects to people. Specific characters from specific fandoms? Not so much.

...What? I was a creative writing minor. I can write whole essays on this shit.

Supernatural fandom?

[identity profile] moose-princess.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That was my first thought, as this is the first fandom I've seen that fan poetry is really a thing. No idea what the fic mentioned is, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
There's fan poetry in the Supernatural fandom? I'm totally in the wrong corner.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate most poetry. There are a few I like, but outside of personal preference and basic competence I don't even really know what separates a good poem from an average one. So honestly I don't really understand getting particularly bent out of shape over fandom poetry.

Why not just skim them? That's what I do to 90% of songs and poems inserted into prose.

Random Line Breaks
Don't, a poem, make!

tell that to e. e. cummings

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a lot of the fan poetry that comes my way is just embarrassing. Mind you, so is the bad fic, but still.

[identity profile] cobryn-moy.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I teach poetry as part of my job. I'm really no snob about form or style. What makes a good poem is the ability to stir the reader to think something she's never thought before or to offer a new and moving articulation. That can be done in all kinds of ways.

That said, in fifteen years of fandom I have read a piece of fan poetry that wasn't embarrassing and trite exactly once in my entire life.

[identity profile] myrioddity.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
...I didn't take OP's "random line breaks do not a poem make" as a condemnation of free verse. :x Nowadays it's not like writing without any particular meter or scheme is a problem.

But, sometimes
the pauses, and
visual
effects
of line breaks just dis-
tract from a
lack of
real
content. We're trained
to see line breaks and think
prose doesn't look like that,
it must be a poem!

But I'm not entitling the twelve lines above "F!S Comment" and sticking it in my bad poetry folder because I just wrote a comment and then put line breaks in it.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
ZOMG! That is the most beautiful poem I ever readeded!

In other words, agreed.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Completely agree.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
So agreed, anon. So agreed. Fan poetry is just awful, and I'm someone who generally likes poetry.

There's a poetry fic in XM:FC fandom and every time I see it's updated I shudder in secondhand embarrassment. The fic's okay on its own, mediocre but not bad, but the poetry is awful.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner. That is the exact thing that inspired this secret. The poetry is so bad, I weep. And the fact that people fawn over it makes me cringe. I'm not asking for full on sonnets, but something more than a few broken up sentences would be an improvement.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Not the anon above, but oh lord, that fic, that poetry! It's even worse since we're supposed to believe Erik is some kind of famous poet and the poems are so rubbish. I'm completely unable to suspend my disbelief when reading it! (Yes, it appears that superhumans with special powers are more believable to me than a literature professor being hired and published with those poems.)

Uhh...fandom poetry is horrifically cringe-worthy. I've read maybe two that aren't horrifying.

It's like saying, "What is art really? How do you define it?"

Well. There's a standard.

And honestly, I don't really want to read an awkward A/B rhyming scheme about the tragic death of a character.

Sorry. Some poetry just sucks.
