I used to collect a lot of make up in the hopes that collecting it would subconsciously teach me how to use it. or something. |D

So, I stopped, and I only get what I really "need" (white eyeliner=the best thing ever to me), but the other day I saw Muppet nail polish.

Sometimes it's just plain possible to mix your fandom loves and makeup love, ya know? And if your friend thinks that collecting makeup is shallow and useless, she's just being shallow IMO. If she can't see beyond what you're collecting, to see you...

"...collecting it would subconsciously teach me how to use it"

PFFFHAHAHA this sounds way too adorable. The logic makes no sense. It's like gathering a pile of groceries, and hoping your latent psychic powers will show you the Meal That Is To Come.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
HDU my psychic cooking powers never fail me! They work 150% of the time! :D

But, yeah... Part of it was that I read a lot about how to do it, but I had no way to turn those skills into real life make-up skills. Plus I was get the cheapest eyeliner I could in the color I wanted. My friend took me to the side one day and pointed out that the eyeliners I was getting were so cheap that it probably hurt to apply them.

She was right, of course. |D I saved up money and then bought some higher end stuff, and it goes on so smoothly... She's a genius she is. |D

Muppet nail polish? I think I might have one of those...

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I have the glitter stuff, Kermit green and Gonzo blue. I haven't had glitter polish in so long, but it's totally worth it! ♥

[identity profile] to-question.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I have Wocka Wocka and it is GORGEOUS. I originally got it because my inner child screamed "FOZZY BEAR!" at me. I also really want Meep Meep Meep and all the polishes that reference Miss Piggy.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
The place I went only had the green, the blue, and the crazy multicolored one that was like party animal or something, and only the glitter polishes, none of the solid. They're just fun. :D

[identity profile] to-question.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I envy you. The place I went to only had Wocka Wocka and the Animal one. I want a glitter nail polish like burning.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Where did you go? I managed to find it at a Fred Meyers, but I don't know where else you can find them. ^^;

[identity profile] to-question.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Please don't judge me by how pathetic this sounds, but I went to a Sephora in the next state over. :) I'm pretty sure Amazon has them for a fraction of the price. That's where I got my bottles of INRW.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
No judging. If I had the means, there are definitely reasons I'd want to travel to other states. :)

I'll take a look on Amazon, thank you! ♥

Ah ha hah! Yes. I have occasionally bought a lipstick or an eyeliner in the hopes of being able to wield it with some skill.

Never gonna happen.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly, right? :)

Nope, never ever going to work... -_-;

Though I have finally managed to figure out how to apply pencil liner! Sort of. It goes on thick, and I can't "wing it" out or it looks stupid, but I can kind of apply it now. |D

[personal profile] tabaqui 2012-01-29 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I can get it under my lower lashes pretty tidily. But really - i'm pants at choosing lipstick. It always looks like death or something. Just - bleh. O well. My lips are so chapped all the time, anyway, lipstick looks horrible on them.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I can apply it to my waterline, kind of, but not under... As for lipstick... I was shopping and I found this $1.50 lipstick that was buy-one-get-one-half-off and it was payday...

So now I have a ton of lipstick, and not all of it actually works, lol. But I have bright pink, and even though it doesn't completely match, it's so darn cheery. |D

Lipstick is weird like that, lol. And all the pretty colors line up in a row~ |D

[personal profile] tabaqui 2012-01-29 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yes!
Makeup is so *pretty*! The swirled eye shadows and perfect slopes of lipstick and the colors like Jolly Ranchers! But then i attempt to match my skin tone (faded fish underbelly) and actually *apply* it and it's Tammy Faye Baker in a tornado.

*sigh*

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
And the shiney ones and the sparkly ones! I love metallics, like silver and gold eyeliner and lipsticks! They're just so lovely! But, I can't match very well, lol. "D

Not quite Tammy Faye Baker levels, but that's only because I have friends who are good at makeup application, and they were there to help me out when I inevitably gave myself an accidental "black eye". |D

[personal profile] tabaqui 2012-01-29 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! Yes, the sparklies! Which, quite frankly - i'm too old for. I know my limits.

My daughter would love to do my makeup, but at this point, i just...meh. Plus, since i don't wear it and haven't for years, *any* makeup looks like too much makeup, so i'm forever thinking 'clown!! clown!'.

And i have glasses, so it's hard to put the damn stuff on my eyes because i can't freakin' *see*.

In short - i embrace my hippy-dippy make-up free life and hope i never have a dinner with the President! :)

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm from a city where glitter is normal for adults thanks to hippies and fairy fests (among other things), so I probably have a skewed view of what's normal and not... |D

Yeah, my friends love to do make up- seriously, one of my friends is crazy good at it, she can put Canadian flags on her lips, and checkerboards on her eyelids. She can wear lime green on her eyes and make it look good. :D

Oh, yeah, the glasses problem... I have glasses, so make up doesn't always work. Usually (when I feel like adding make up) it's just eyeliner, nothing fancy, so it works. I mean, in theory I have contact lenses, but...

Oh same, I mean, I think it would be fun to have make up put on me, if I was to meet the president, but I couldn't do it myself... I really hope I never have to meet the president because of that, lol. |D

Hehe.

I get the feeling, in rl, we'd get along quite delightfully. :)

The Muppet nail polish is amazing! My friends got me four of them for Christmas, they are all so fabulous.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Fabulous is the perfect word for it! ♥

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Something I always have been meaning to do is hunt down the book Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin, which is supposedly a solid intro to makeup. I've only ever read parts of his Face Forward book, which is what first introduced me to the idea of makeup as a type of art and a trainable skill rather than an esoteric cult I never got initiated into and it's too late now forever. He also, from what I remember, wrote in a friendly and appreciative way towards his makeup models and the reader -- there's never a feeling of "MAKEUP IS TO HIDE YOUR FLAWS", but "makeup can accentuate different parts of your self". FF had some amount of how-to, but apparently MF does it a little more in-depth. Anyway, maybe worth finding for folks in this thread?

Also, iirc, Sephora is now selling a beginner's eyeshadow kit that has instructions, as well...

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I've never actually read those books, but I'll take a look if I can! Thank you. ♥ Yeah, that's kind of the same way that I thought of it- like a cult I wasn't initiated into... And Sephora... I love their stuff, but it's so expensive! I'll look into it, though!

Thank you kindly~ ♥

Making Faces is *awesome* I find it a lot more useful than Face Forward in terms of practical advice. I only wish it had a bit more on choosing colors, I'm still not very good at that.
