Don't mind her, girls in fandom often tend to be against everything girly and think that if you like to take care of your appearance you're shallow. I used to be like that too because of my teenage life experiences.

I used to collect a lot of make up in the hopes that collecting it would subconsciously teach me how to use it. or something. |D

So, I stopped, and I only get what I really "need" (white eyeliner=the best thing ever to me), but the other day I saw Muppet nail polish.

Sometimes it's just plain possible to mix your fandom loves and makeup love, ya know? And if your friend thinks that collecting makeup is shallow and useless, she's just being shallow IMO. If she can't see beyond what you're collecting, to see you...

I try to combine fandom and nail polish as much as possible. I pretty much always paint my nail in colors that remind of fandom in some way. XD

I just don't get why anybody would even collect make up and shit? It's supposed to be used not hoarded. Doesn't it get all old and moldy after a while? Do you put it on display? Look at it and get nostagic for that day when you bought the Sunkissed Lemon instead of the Mystical Magical Mystery Blue?

Yay, makeup! My makeup collection kind of exploded in the past few months and I'm mostly just shocked at how okay I am with it.

But yeah, that's irritating that she's judging you. Nothing's wrong with liking makeup.

Eh, I don't judge people for collecting things, but I do sort of wonder why people collect things that have an actual finite use. I mean, I know someone who collects cereal boxes because the art changes and they've been doing it for years, but they don't eat the cereal. Others do it with sodas and stuff like that. It always makes me go :/

Man, my weakness is OPI nail polish. They're all so pretty and when I see all the bottles lined up in a store display I'm like a magpie with a ball of foil. That and Barry M glitter dust.

Um, why do we have to choose one over the other? Or rather: Why is one "more useful" than the other? I don't get where people get the notion from that you just put figures up on display and that's that, but yeah...

I collect both. Maybe not as much make-up as merchandise, but sometimes I just can't walk past a really nice lipstick or eyeshadow.

I just wish we could appreciate both and not be all: "I have the better hobby". Just... no.

I like collecting anime merch a lot more but...

When my friends tell me they'd rather buy clothes or makeup, it makes me wish I knew how to match clothes and how to put on makeup. It feels like I'm the only girl that missed out on that how to use makeup class and dress attractively.

But whatever makes you happy. Your friends are wrong for judging you.

Your friend might need to hear that she isn't special for being a girl who doesn't like makeup and prefers anime figures instead. Then maybe she'll shut up about it and just let you both enjoy your collections and hobbies.
Makeup is pretty and fun. That's it, no more explanation needed.
There are people who have severe image issues who use makeup as a band-aid, and there are people and institutions who are huge judgmental assholes to people (mainly women) who don't wear makeup or enough makeup, but I don't think either of those factor into your makeup hobby so it's none of your friend's business.

I used to love collecting expensive department store make-up. I didn't wear make-up that often but I loved having the option.

I never wear make-up anymore but if I had the money for the stuff I like I might be tempted.

I collect both anime figures and make-up (and I store the make-up until I decide to use them - so, yes, I use everything I buy, just not immediately). I also love any make-up that's fandom-related, such as the Captain America cologne (I use men's perfume sometimes), Lady Gaga lipstick, anime-themed eyelashes/mascara etc.
Of course I don't buy every make up I like to look at, just the ones I know I'll be using (or if it's really cheap).

Also, dying to know what brand the make-up in the secret is. Anyone?

Eh, I think buying lots of make-up is more common in general than buying anime merch, and more folks wouldn't bat an eyelash at a woman with a big make-up collection, than at someone buying cartoon figurines. Just general people out there who aren't into fandom and/or don't even know such a thing exists, not to mention anime (and there's loads of people like that), would be less surprised at a make-up table full of make-up, than shelves upon shelves of "that kiddy cartoony stuff you were supposed to grow out of years ago". It's just how people in general think about cartoons.

Sure, it doesn't matter what other people think of your hobbies (though to a lot of people, opinions of others are important if not crucial, let's be honest here, because not everyone has high self-esteem) but one would have thought your friend would be aware of the whole "women liking and buying plenty of girly things is nothing out of the ordinary, it's often even expected, but women liking little toys from cartoons, aren't QUITE as common" thing, you know? Instead, she dismisses you doing something a lot of women do anyway! Wow, how edgy.

I'm thinking she has some hidden issues. Maybe she'll get used to make-up when she's older, who knows? I only started wearing it at 19, though that was over a decade ago, and girls these days buy make-up much earlier in their lives, and there's loads of cheap teen brands. Now that I have my own money, I swear by Dior because once you try quality brands, you can't go back. :D

(Though I seldom watch anime these days, I did buy shoujo manga as a teen, so I'm in no way dissing anime merch, before someone jumps on that. I just like other things more now. Hobbies can change!)

Ugh, this reminds me of an irl/fandom friend of mine. I don't wear makeup all the time, but when I do it's almost always for fun (playing with colors and such; it's like painting on skin). I don't do it to "attract the male gaze" (I'm gay), and I don't do it because I think I have to wear it to be socially acceptable or because I think I need it to look pretty (I look fine with out it). I wear it because I like it and it's what I want to do sometimes.

I've told her this many times, but every time she she sees me wear it, she goes off on a rant about how it's "anti-feminist" and she asks me why I "feel the need to wear it", which I don't.

At the same time she literally worships the Jpop/Kpop girls who are always caked in makeup, squeeling about how cute and natural they are (same with the jrock guys). It's stupid (don't get me wrong, I like their makeup. It's just.... hypocrisy bothers me, a lot).

She collects figures, food, and perfume, and I used to collect figures (I still buy some from time to time, but I'm trying to sell most of them), and I have a nice "collection" of makeup (but I don't collect it).

I agree with this secret, but I think it's pointless to tack on the s!b. Who really cares if you have a use for a collection? What about art collectors, or people who collect foreign currency coins? Stuffed animals? It might bother some people to spend money on something that doesn't do anything else other than exist to be visually appealing, but the whole competition when it comes to what you collect is just silly.

Your friend is being an idiot and you should both like what you like, giving you pleasure is use enough.

HOWEVER. I think a lot of us nerdy and/or tomboyish girls acquire an aversion to things like makeup because whether we like the stuff ourselves or not, we're expected to use it and have it as part of our daily routine just to avoid negative attention. Then there are other issues... which I could go on about, but in summary: I don't think wearing makeup is sexist, but the EXPECTATION that one wear makeup is. I think your friend is probably just misplacing her anger.
