HOWEVER. I think a lot of us nerdy and/or tomboyish girls acquire an aversion to things like makeup because whether we like the stuff ourselves or not, we're expected to use it and have it as part of our daily routine just to avoid negative attention. Then there are other issues... which I could go on about, but in summary: I don't think wearing makeup is sexist, but the EXPECTATION that one wear makeup is. I think your friend is probably just misplacing her anger.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 02:52 am (UTC)(link)To add on a bit: I'm in a relationship where I know that soon I'll have to attend my SO's relatively formal work events with more regularity -- and that I'll be expected to wear makeup and high heels and generally stuff I'm not expected to wear in my own work and only once every other blue moon feel like wearing. In turn, I've gotten guff recently for not being overtly excited about "the chance" to dress up that way while geeking out over trying/figuring out cosplay makeup, which gets to feeling terribly reminiscent of the solid decade or so of people asking "but why don't you want to look prettyyy???".
So, the main reconciliation for me? Is imagining the expected dress-up as a sort of cosplay.
