I just don't get why anybody would even collect make up and shit? It's supposed to be used not hoarded. Doesn't it get all old and moldy after a while? Do you put it on display? Look at it and get nostagic for that day when you bought the Sunkissed Lemon instead of the Mystical Magical Mystery Blue?
IDKI...

You'd probably have to continually soak it in water and then leave it in direct sunlight for it to get legit moldy. Make-up is like anything else that appeals to the collector in people - there are different brands of various prestige, there's some absolutely amazing packaging, there are limited edition collections and sets that need to be completed. I buy a lot of eyeshadows, and I get the same satisfaction seeing them all lined up in a little rainbow on my bathroom shelves as somebody might get seeing their collection of anime figures. And, yes, I still use them everyday. I really don't understand why it's so unthinkable that people might collect cosmetics.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I have nothing against people collecting cosmetics, everyone needs a hobby, but I still don't get it. To me it's like collecting Toilet Paper or Paper Towels or different brands of laundry detergent or cleaning products. I have quite the collection of cat urine remover sprays and liquids. Oh well.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
...It's really not, though. Cosmetics is a huge industry and one of the few that hasn't actually suffered (compared to some) in the recession. There are so many top-end brands, limited edition palettes and colors. When was the last time you saw designer brand toilet paper? Honestly, not everyone is interested in it, so it's understandable that not everyone cares about stuff like branding and packaging and special releases. But saying it's the same as buying toilet paper is like telling somebody who's paid for a limited edition anime figure that they've had shipped from Japan that it's the same as them going to McDonalds and getting a Happy Meal toy. It just shows a lack of understanding of another person's hobby (which is fine) but expressed in a way that's condescending and dismissive and insulting (which is not fine).

I love this comment, anon. ♥

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Not meaning to be condescending, but to me cosmetics are on a par with toilet paper or paper towels and collecting different brands of these items is just as legitimate as collecting cosmetics. They are simply items you use daily and most people discard the containers after use. Because some pay large amounts for certain brands doesn't make them any more useful. I concede that the containers can be creatively styled and collected as examples of the culture. More so than toilet paper packaging. But who knows, someday toilet paper might come in fancy wrappers too. Men's cologne bottles? They have some artistic value also.

Okay, please just take a moment to reread what you're saying.

You're directly comparing make-up to something you use to wipe your arse.

In a thread about people loving make-up and collecting it.

That is condescending. That's so condescending that I'm struggling to believe you don't mean to be condescending.

It's fine if make-up doesn't appeal to you. Maybe you don't wear it at all. Maybe you do wear it but it's not something you think of as a viable collection. That's all fine. Seriously. But you are dismissing other people's hobbies simply because they are not your own, and you're doing it in a way that isn't particularly nice.

Cosmetics may be "simply items you use daily" to you. That's fine. They are something more to other people, something to be valued and collected. That's fine too. But you're pushing your opinion as fact here. That's not fine.

LOL This is kind of perfect. ♥

I think s/he just wanted to explain hir opinion. Chill, you sound too agressive.

This.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm no make-up expert, but... makeup is different, right? Like, different colors, different brands... eh.... but the main reason I'm commenting is because this reminded me of some kids detective story- Encyclopedia Brown or something similar, where a kid does in fact collect toilet paper :P

[identity profile] meruberri.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. As long as you don't store it in extreme heat or cold nothing bad is going to happen to it. I have a bottle of foundation I bought 4 years ago it's still good. I also have some eye shadow and blush that was given to me as a little girl, they're perfectly fine to use today.

And maybe people will collect them because they like having the variety at their disposal every day. No one said they don't use it.

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
This is exactly what my collection is for. I love being able to pick and choose what colors and styles I wear each day, and sort of coordinate it with my outfit. Kind of hard to do that if you just stick to the basics, you know?

[identity profile] purrple-267.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Powder products are pretty much immortal. Liquids go bad, but very slowly - way past the date on the product usually.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I saw an article once (written by somebody with their own line of cosmetics, natch) saying that you should throw away any unused eyeshadow six weeks after buying it. Please. That shit lasts and lasts. Especially if you keep it stored somewhere dry, dark and room temperature (like a drawer). Plus there are products you can buy to restore liquid make-up if it starts separating. I've only used nail polish restores, but I have a friend who swears by the make-up restoration stuff for her foundations.

[identity profile] purrple-267.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen those articles, I think one mentioned throwing out BRUSHES after, I dunno, six months. I mean... brushes! What part of a brush expires after six month? The hair, the glue, the plastic/wooden handle? -_____- I think either the people writing those articles are really bored, smoking something good or they're paid to cause paranoia and make us rebuy things without even finishing our old stuff.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I reckon it's the latter. Buy more products!!! Which is stupid, especially for brushes. I mean, you can buy brush cleaner, so it's not like they're unsanitary. Just keep 'em clean, don't share eyebrushes with other people, store them somewhere dry, they'll be fine. Like you say, it's not like they'll fall apart after six months - if they do, that just means they're poorly made.

[identity profile] citrusy-fun.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Every Christmas for the past twenty or so years, my Aunt has gotten makeup brushes (expensive ones) as one of her presents. As soon as she does, she throws away the old ones, and when I asked her once she said that eventually there is wear and tear on it, as there is with everything. It wasn't in a six month period (which I think is pretty unreasonable, and she probably would too), but in 12 months.

I can understand throwing out eyeshadow makeup in a certain period too. Eventually the brush you use for your eye makeup might get some germs on it, such as conjunctivitis or something. Maybe that's why it should be thrown out, if you consider it something like a toothbrush.

Then again, I'm not one to be wearing makeup, so that entire world is a mystery to me. When I was 'goth' in highschool, the occasional bit of black lipstick, and nail polish would get passed around my few friends... and I've watched my mom and sister and my aunt put on makeup, but that world pretty much eludes me to this day.

Collection though... can understand entirely.
My other aunt and uncle from Italy brought my sister this makeup set that was modeled as candies (they got me one too, so I didn't feel left out... I still have mine, and now I think it was bit of a gag from them). ^_^'

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
They're just trying to make more money off the people who believe that. It lasts, but I'd just about bet anything that person's makeup line wasn't exactly cheap. XD

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
Some makeups expire and you DO need to throw them out either because the chemicals are breaking up the product, thus causing it to no longer work properly, or too much bacteria builds up. Things like liquid/cream foundation, mascara, eyeliners expire, but if you take good care of your makeup you don't need to worry too much about bacteria buildup so they should last long enough. And even if the product expires or you use it all up, the packaging can be really cute or interesting that you want to keep it to display along with your other makeup stuff.
Also, people collect things that don't expire, like brushes and powder eyeshadow palettes.
