It's Americans shamelessly stealing and Americanising yet more stuff. London is practically a character itself in the original stories, but no, everything in the fucking world has to happen in New York to be of any use to anyone.

Sorry, that was unnecessarily phrased. This kind of US-centrism really annoys me though.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because lots and lots of us are stoopid.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
... actually, the US only scores between 2 and .5 points below the UK on IQ tests on average (choosing the UK for comparison here because Sherlock = made in the UK).

Anti-US sentiment founded upon improper data is stoopid, though. :)

Yup. The fact that they asked to remake Sherlock, got turned down and are now apparently doing it anyway is awful.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? The BBC doesn't own the characters. Why should they be the only ones allowed to play in the Sherlock sandbox?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Most likely how this is apparently going down: they wanted to remake BBC's version of "Sherlock" specifically and things either fell through or they got turned down, so it sounds almost like they're going to try to do it anyway and toe the line.

Granted, they could bring something new to the table besides "It's set in a America! With Americans! In New York because all Americans live in New York!", but who knows.

Although the American storyline is atrocious, I could suspend belief in choosing NY as the American spin on London.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Even American are tired of ~everything ever~ being set in New York. Jesus Christ producers, there are other cities out there.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
lol it's funny to see how many of you don't understand marketing - you set a show in the US' largest city because that city has the most range to film in, is fairly likely to be randomly picked as the site of whatever due to how many people are in it (or LA), has the REASONABILITY that so many people could get sick/die/kidnapped/whatever for the show/movie to proceed, hint: small towns with 100 deaths = you have a massively unrealistic problem, and, people who live in cities that are so big provide the largest markets for Nielsen, etc. to analyze, and thus setting it in their city means the largest market will tune in, not a set in stone fact.

It actually makes a lot of sense why so many US shows are set in New York and Cali cities, beyond that's where the studios are, but you can continue to be mad.

Stealing? Stealing from who? This is just another Sherlock adaptation to add to the pile of Sherlock adaptions. Not really a big deal. And after this adaptation is done there will be a hundred more after it. Probably set in all sorts of places.

Also, did you know that the Moffat adaptation of Sherlock was partially funded by Americans? Specifically by PBS (US, Boston) which in turn gets its money from taxes and donations. So, say what you want about Americans but if it weren't for them, you probably wouldn't be getting Moffat's take on it. Or at least you would have probably only a single movie.

this! and I say this as an American
