Yeah, you're missing the point. On its face, it might pass the Bechdel test, but the thing is, these barely pubescent female characters are OH SO PURE AND VIRGINAL that they're never going to talk about boys, or date, or even have any boys in their classes apparently. Or have any kind of sexuality EVER beyond some blushing and pseudo-lesbian innuendo.

Respectful? Have you actually watched this stuff? It's full of panty shots and fanservice beach episodes. The plots might focus on the characters' relationships but that sure as fuck doesn't preclude it from being a bunch of fetishistic ridiculousness for the lolicon gaze.

And no, I don't prefer DRRR or KHR, either. I hate moe because it's taking over the industry and driving entire media into a hikikomori niche.

This is pretty important. The characters may be female but the aren't exactly well rounded or realistic, which is what gets me. I always want so much more from them than I actually get because their target audience doesn't want the characters to act like real people, they just want completely idealized girls whose only flaws are "clumsy" or "a big airheaded".

There was that otaku reaction when whatshername from Kannagi was revealed to have had a boyfriend a zillion years ago. OH MY GOD YOU MEAN SHE MAY NOT BE A VIRGIN AND WE WERE FAPPING TO SECOND-HAND GOODS? THIS CANNOT BE TRUE LET'S BURN THE MANGA AND MUTILATE THE DOLLS.

(OK, this was just an insane minority, but they're the ones who drive the franchise by obsessively buying merchandise.)

Luckily the obsessive fans are a (loud) minority. There's also girls who went crazy after the voice actor Mamoru Miyano got married and his wife became pregnant, his fans wrote things like they hope "that slut will miscarry" and that Miyano's agency should fire him because he had some guts to do something like that and betray his fans.

Yeah, the other side can get pretty bad, too, though I don't remember anything so over-the-top on the female side than the obsessive male side is capable of. I mean, jealous frothing and whining is one thing, but stalking your favorite seiyuu, posting pics of her with her boyfriend and declaring her a filthy slut who should be boycotted because she sullies the image of the PURE VIRGINAL characters she plays...

But yeah, female otaku can get pretty obsessive, too. There's a very good reason why certain male characters from certain franchises won't ever get official girlfriends.

IDK who that is, but that's absolutely disgusting. Who are they trying to impress by saying that kind of crap. Ugh.

I want to see how people would react if NamiDai, OnoDai, NakaYuu or Kamiya knocked up a girl or two.

You are a cool person with cool things to say ♥

On one hand, I am glad that it's easier to find an anime series where it's all about girls and friendship, because I don't see much (if at all) of it here on the western front (live action and animated). But on the other, holy crow there's so much infantilization and fanservice going on to neutralize the previous points that's it's almost like I'm watching a harem show, minus the leading male, audience stand-in, character.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
This is a good comment.

Yes, these series do have female characters who do actually do things other than fill the obligatory female character slot, but they're really idealized and mostly there to be fetishized for being pure and innocent by the male otaku target audience, and their flaws (usually clumsiness, airheadedness, shyness, or the whole "tsundere" thing) are supposed to be endearing and make said target audience want to protect and coddle them.
These characters are there first and foremost for men to label them as their "perfect waifu." They are there to be fetishized.

It also doesn't help that the industry's been supersaturated with moe shows for a while now.

You speak like someone who hasn't actually seen any of these anime. I'm not going to say that there aren't any of the kind you describe, but I will say that many are not. Sweeping assumptions aren't really helpful to the discussion.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I understand what you're saying, but you're implying that girls' sexuality always involves talking about boys, dating boys, looking at boys, boys boys boys etc boys. Really? Really?

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
Even if a girl is queer she's probably going to end up in a conversation about boys with her friends eventually. The majority of the human population is straight...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-30 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not all girls like to talk about boys, and it doesn't necessarily mean they're queer. Even some straight girls just have better (in their opinion) things to talk about with their friends than boys and dating.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Have YOU actually watched the shows I posted? They don't actually feature a single panty shot! And the girls are primarily 16 or older! And in Lucky Star and Idolm@ster there are named, relevant male characters that are also not harem leads.
