K-ON! is very popular among girls(at least in Japan) because it's just very cute and the girls aren't sexualized at all. But I know what you mean, especially yaoi fangirls seem to hate every single female character out there but I guess it's kind of understandable if they only read shonen or yaoi where girls have very poor characterization.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
About girls, sure, but they're also full of stupid stereotypes and cultural standards that don't exactly feel comfortable to non-Japanese fans (as opposed to shounen and things like that, which could be about robots or ninjas or shinigami instead of highschool.) And the fanservice--don't forget that a lot of moe animes have fanservice, just in case.

I tent to avoid ones with panty shots like the top one. I like girls, but that kinda stuff gives me the creeps - more so when I'm watching for cute friendship shows :c But those two bottom ones (esp. bottom right) seem sweet - what's the titles so I can google (and determine if I want to watch or not)?

Yeah, you're missing the point. On its face, it might pass the Bechdel test, but the thing is, these barely pubescent female characters are OH SO PURE AND VIRGINAL that they're never going to talk about boys, or date, or even have any boys in their classes apparently. Or have any kind of sexuality EVER beyond some blushing and pseudo-lesbian innuendo.

Respectful? Have you actually watched this stuff? It's full of panty shots and fanservice beach episodes. The plots might focus on the characters' relationships but that sure as fuck doesn't preclude it from being a bunch of fetishistic ridiculousness for the lolicon gaze.

And no, I don't prefer DRRR or KHR, either. I hate moe because it's taking over the industry and driving entire media into a hikikomori niche.

You're comparing action shows to slice of life. Why do you assume everyone has to like slice of life? Personally I hate it, and it has nothing to do with the gender of the protagonists.

I have attempted to watch one episode of Lucky Star and mostly just didn't get it at all, and I've never seen the top and left ones, but I'm 100% with you on K-ON!; the focus on the girls as people is very genuine and ultimately the series is clearly about female friendships.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like moe anime because the sole point of these shows, as far as I can tell, is to carefully craft idealized female characters to appeal to men. The whole fetishism undertone is a massive turn off.

90% of anime were made to pander to their audience with fanservice, including moe shows that sexualize the characters - male or female - behind an innocent disguise.

Manabi Straight
On the surface: youth, friendship between high school girls, hard work
The real appeal: girls in miniskirts, sometimes flying over your head and showing their panties to the world; girls drawn to look prepubescent, showing their blushing flesh in swim suits

Reborn
On the surface: friendship, courage, hard work, action
The real appeal: a catalog of pretty boys and men for the audience to fantasize

If you want to tell people your tastes are better than theirs, then watch the real, deep, meaningful 10% that are ugly due to lazy character designs or intentionally made to not look fabulous in hopes of gaining some kind of status as a ~mature~ production.

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Genuine focus on female characters that are all about the relationships and friendships among said female characters" pandering to a mostly-lolicon male audience, created with the objective of selling merchandise.

Totally respectful.

I'd rather have a show with a few well-written female characters than a ton of two-dimensional ones whose only purpose is to sell bodypillows and figures to otaku.

Those shows are full of soulless 2D female characters whose friendships and flaws aren't relatable at all. Good grief, I swear if I see another series with pubescent girls arguing about each other's breast sizes I'm gonna pull my hair out.

There are shows that pander to men, and there are an increasing amount of shows that pander to women. Both tend to have unrealistic characters.

Not seeing the problem, personally. I prefer moe, but 'tis simply my preference.

I'm a little sick of how saturated the market has become with moe, but I'm mostly ambivalent to its existence. Though the extreme infantilization combined with fanservice does creep me out something fierce.

But I do agree on one point; despite the fact that it's a solidly written show and has female characters who behave like actual human beings most of the time, Durarara!!! is not any more respectful towards women. It's just more subtle about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I can easily tell by by the lack of specifications in the comments that most people didn't even try to watch any of these shows.

Thanks to AnonymousX4, stargathering, zanahoria and antialiasis for actually giving informed opinons.

What about those of us who like both?

And considering how fandom is nowadays, it's not like one can admit to enjoying either without being judged harshly. :T

...kudos for putting Idolm@ster in there though. :'D I've been in the fandom (albeit silently) since the games, and the anime is wonderful. <3

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
I find slice-of-life boring and the jokes unfunny. I don't get the appeal. I will, however, watch ridiculous pandering T&A action shows (Hello Ikki Tousen). The pedo vibe in a lot of moe stuff just squicks me out. They look like little girls. If I'm gonna be slumming it and enjoying piles of panty shots, I'd prefer the girls look like they're over 16.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
I agree and I don't find most of these shows all that creepy either. I could see how someone would be ANNOYED by it, but what's wrong with cute girls doing things? How is that supposed to offend me? I will say that most of these series bored me (like K-ON! for example which seemed to have a plot that went nowhere, except the last two episodes of S1 where I thought it would pick up in the next season with them playing actual gigs, but NOPE). But I don't get why it ellicits such a visceral reaction

And speaking of K-ON!, IIRC there are NO MALE CHARACTERS at all in the damn show, just females. So the focus is entirely on female characters, which IMO is probably why a lot of people don't like it, even if they haven't outwardly expressed that as a main reason for disliking it.

You know what's interesting? That all 3 shows in the OP are by a female writer: Touko Machida (Lucky Star, Idolm@ster) and Reiko Yoshida (K-ON). In the cases of Idolm@ster and K-ON, they're actually (co-)directed by females! Naoko Yamada is K-ON's director and Touko Takao is Idolm@ster's director. K-ON's character designs are also by a girl: Horiguchi Yukiko.
