Word to everything in this comment. ^_^

Have they said anything yet on ideas for casting for Elementary? I've heard nothing on it yet other than it being set in New York. A female Holmes would be a brilliant move though the pessimist in me doesn't hold out much hope. A female Watson? A bit more likely.

Personally I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with. As far as I'm concerned there can never be enough Holmes adaptations. Either it will end up being a fun ride or a hilarious train wreck.

I'm not sure I like the idea of male Watson and female Watson. Watson has always been more emotional and, yes, less intelligent than Holmes, and making the one male and the other female just supports existing gender stereotypes. Doing the other way 'round would be way more interesting.

No I don't want that dynamic either which is why I think a female Holmes would be a lot more interesting. But, sadly, if they were to genderswap anyone I can see it more likely being Watson for the very gender stereotyped reasons you stated. I can just imagine a producer saying something like; "Watson always felt more feminine to me...so we thought to make him female here."

Which is what happened to the protagonist of the Silent Hill movie. :P And that gave me enough "eww" to last me a lifetime.

It's been done, sort of. There was a 70s tv movie that starred Larry Hagman as an inept motorcycle cop named Stanley Holmes whose motorcycle falls over onto his head, and he wakes up thinking he's Sherlock Holmes, and his social worker is a woman named Watson.

y'know, one one hand, i can't help but think that female!watson could be interesting. on the other hand...I WANT THEM BOTH TO BE LADIES because male!sherlock and female!watson would likely mean LOOK AT SHERLOCK, HE IS SO SMART. LOOK AT DR. JANE WATSON. SHE IS SO FASCINATED BY HIM. and she would probably not be a soldier or allowed to be nearly as badass as a dude. and yeah. dnw :((

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a female Watson fangirling over a male Holmes is a very different dynamic than male Watson fanboying over a male Holmes.

Plus, how long do you think it could be until they decide she should have a crush on him? And before you roll your eyes--look what's happened with Irene Adler in more modern versions (even the BBC one, where she says she's a lesbian), and you DON'T think they'd pull that with a female Watson? They would totally do it. You know it, I know it, the smiley-face on the wall knows it.

[identity profile] copperiisulfate.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
and now i'm thinking, rather than male!sherlock and female!watson, i think i would be a lot happier with a female!sherlock and male!watson, because then even if they decided to go all romantic-subplot on me, it would be less uncomfortable. plus, i was saying to someone the other day how other than Bones, i couldn't think of a single series where we get a girl!genius. i could be wrong but that's what comes to mind

i think my whole deal is that I JUST REALLY WANT A GIRL!SHERLOCK D:

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Bones does have kind of a "female Holmes, male Watson" vibe, huh?

Female Sherlock would be awesome. (-:

Why wouldn't Lady Watson be a soldier? If it's a modern adaptation she could be. There are female medics all over the place in the Army.

[identity profile] copperiisulfate.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
oh i'm not saying she couldn't be because she certainly could and i would in fact love it more than anything if she was an army medic. i just meant that i'm sceptical that we will, in general, get a badass lady watson who isn't just reduced to being starry-eyed over holmes, especially if it's a male holmes :(

i, of course, hope that i'm wrong in my cynicism and that they do manage to surprise me.
