I'm not sure how to feel about it, really. On one hand, I really like several CBS shows, so I've nothing against the channel. Also, I've liked every single adaptation of Holmes I've gotten my paws on (and that's bits of pretty much every single English one). So I'm more than willing to give it a try.

On the other hand, I worry they'll screw it up somehow. Plus I really can't see how you could possibly set Sherlock Holmes anywhere but London and yet we already have a Holmes and Watson running around modern day London, in my mind. And it seems odd for Americans to try to pull off such a quintessentially British thing. Of course both the Harry Potter and LotR movies were made by Hollywood, technically...

Well, here's hoping it's great!

(and I love the ideas others have mentioned of switching it up a bit...oh god if only I could have a woman as Sherlock Holmes and have her still be a brilliant badass with better things to do than have romantic entanglements!! Also maybe a Holmes closer to the one in the books/stories? I love Cumberbatch and RDJ, don't get me wrong, but if you could somehow combine bits of their interpretations and get something closer to the original...)

CBS has this weird thing where they get good unique shows with lots of potential and then litter them with little bits of crap and stupidity because the execs are fucking morons (that's really the only explanation I can think of). So that's what I'm afraid of -- that it'll be some really cool concept whose potential will get totally wasted.

Also, I don't get why an American version has to be set in America. Couldn't it be, like, two Americans who are living in London? Or like, have just one of them be an American? I think that would actually highlight the city of London (which yeah, I've always viewed as almost a character) even more because they're not actually natives and therefore would be justified in explaining and exploring and learning about all the little details of the city, which would be really cool. Although that could easily degenerate into "Brits are weird, lets make them weirder to justify writing weird stories!" God, I hate having to be so mistrustful of network execs.

Or at least, like, Chicago. Or New Orleans. Or Philadelphia. Or something. Not New York City AGAIN.

THIS!
One of the things I liked about C.S.I. (also on CBS) was that it wasn't set in New York (it's set in Las Vegas). Or even LA, Chicago, or Boston, which seem to be popular alternatives to NYC.

I'm trying to think where a good place for a US version of Sherlock Holmes to be set. Somewhere in New England...? (-:

The reason for NYC and not London is money, money, money. It's freakin' expensive to do a show in London. Even for a network.

I love your idea of two or one Americans in London, (Especially if it was John Watson. Just having returned from Afghanistan. Thought he just get out of the US because the PTSD was becoming too much.) But again, the dollar is weak. CBS is at its heart, a company, and the lesser risk if the show were to flop, would to keep it in US.

Hell, do it in London, Ontario.

Thisity this this this. I have a raging case of second city syndrome, so I like your idea of Chicago

I think maybe what they should (have?) do(ne) is give it a strong setting that would take the place of London in the storyline. If you're doing an adaptation for another country, part of the idea (I think) is translating the concepts. So they should pick a time/place with a very strong atmosphere, and have the characters grow to reflect that, while still maintaining the key elements of the Holmes/Watson dynamic.
